In the early 80's Defence Colony & Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi were localities that found favour with Afghan refugees.
Within few months in our fairly relaxed locality there were disturbing changes to our way of life.

From walking alone without a second thought to Defence Colony Market a popular place with eateries, bakeries & other stores we began to go in two’s or more
as the young men who began hanging around streets in groups seemed unaccustomed to seeing unchaperoned girls/women.

A few nasty experiences later, it became safer to take the car, especially after dark.
Inter clan fights in service lanes became the norm. Hearing pounding feet late at night was scary enough but then one worried about someone jumping the wall & finding refuge in the rear

Drug dealing & other crimes of bullying senior citizen landlords became frequent.
These people have lived with violence as a way of life for decades & are terror hardened.
