Minnesota Department of Education will be meeting to discuss Social Studies Standards this morning at 8:30 am. Stay tuned for coverage!
Introduction of the new Deputy Commissioner and welcoming members of the panel.
The Committee has expressed a desire for better, and more frequent communication. There will be monthly meetings for the remainder of the Social Studies Standards process- Bobbie Burnham
September 21, 2021 will be the final committee meeting and will need to be adhered to.
Today is the beginning of the review of feedback for Revised Standards Round Two.
Dr. Lanise Block is discussing the timeline for today including individual review of feedback, and large group feedback.
Meeting Objectives: Review public feedback, refine draft 2 through reflection & response to the following questions: How does the language of the standards reflect the knowledge and skills of the discipline? Is an additional standard needed for ethnic studies?
"Being American is more than a pride we inherit, it's the past we step into and how we repair it."- Amanda Gorman, The Hill We Climb- quote to focus on for grounding in the group. How does the poem as a whole inspire and inform the Social Studies Standards we are working towards?
Small group break-out sessions until 9:15 am.
Return from Small Groups, and breakdown of discussions.
Maurella Cunningham: I did not like the message of the poem that all of this terrible stuff has been done to us but it has been strategically built into our nation. There are some things that I just really did not care for,
and to me it felt like propaganda."
"The second draft is such an amazing start for the third draft"
"How is MDE going to respond to feedback from the public that is steeped in racism? I think there is some contradictions by MDE if they don't address directly this type of feedback. Is MDE prepared to create robust ethnic studies strand that speak to or speak against that is
causing damage to the State, to our youth, and to our leadership?"
We need to take time to actually look at what is the feedback, and is there a clarion call for us to examine issues regarding racism, etc.?
Hour for individual review of feedback. Discussion will continue at 10:30 am.
Small-Group Meeting Sessions followed by lunch. Come together for large group discussion at 12:30 pm.
This reporter is experiencing technical difficulties and will continue coverage as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.
