Parents are speaking either in favor or against the mask potential mandate at the start of the meeting.
Majority of parents have been in favor of the mask mandate, but there have been some dissenters regarding masks.
"We have lost no children and no teachers. Every person in this room will get COVID if they have not. It is endemic. All students need to be able to learn their socio-emotional cues which they will not be able to do if persons are all wearing masks."- This statement elicited
applause.
"We need to acknowledge that our children are being abused and their freedom is being taken away."
Person yelling: "We love our freedom"
"The question boils down to how many dead children do we consider acceptable? The answer should be as close to zero as possible."
John VanOvern: "Many of us are here pro-mask mandate which is something you do not see frequently. Masks make it safe for high risk students to be able to learn"
Jana Osak: "I am here because I believe that all students deserve better than a one size fits all mandate. We need to have an option- medical exemption, etc."
A medical physician and wife of a doctor: "Masks are the best way to keep our children safe, and we are behind the COVID curve because we start later. We need to take advantage of that. We need to keep our kids safe."
Dr. Katie Essie: "We are seeing a new phase of this disease, pediatric hospitalizations are at an all-time high, we need to go back to basics with masks, hand washing and social distancing."
Lindsay Fort: "I am in education. Consistency is most important- we need to maintain consistent masking, etc., it doesn't work to have inconsistent masking for anyone involved."
Andy Tilstra: "Sincerely hope that people choose to get vaccinated and wear masks. We need to have in-person learning for our students. I hope we have a better strategy to keep kids school and help protect our kids. What are our long-term strategies?"
Diana: "I would like you to continue to your backing of the mask mandate. We need to worry about spread. We need time to learn about COVID and in that time we need to wear masks to stop the spread."
"What is your long-term plan for the students who experiencing emotional harm from this, as well as learning harm?"
"We did not sign on to wearing face diapers and if the district enforces a mask mandate they will be opening themselves up to litigation."
"When we have something that individual actions cannot prevent then we have to have a mandate to protect those who cannot get vaccinated. This a free rider and tragedy of the comments problem"
Miss Anderson: "I am grateful to the Ramsey County Commissioner for making the mask mandate. There is no plan in this district to address what happens 'when' and 'when' will happen. This is an exponential problem. Use the Math if you don't want to use the Science."
Miss Griffin: "Nobody is addressing that where there is risk there must also be choice. MDH: Flu 2016-2016: 3695 versus last year we had 35 flu cases."
Mr. Blood: "Masks don't work. If you look at the science, the real science, masks don't work. My son will not be coming to Mounds View if he has to wear a mask"
Jonathan Weinhagen: "Since Ramsey County has directed us to enforce the mask mandate then we will be standing by that decision."
