Hundreds of vehicles have passed through the Zwartkop Raceway drive thru vaccination site.
By 6pm, there were still scores of cars waiting in the queue.
The drive thru will be open until 9pm.
The site will open from 9am to 5pm tomorrow and on Sunday.
“The turnout has been massive. The opening of the registration to over 18s saw a flood of people streaming to the drive thru. Within the first 90 minutes, 50 between the ages of 18 and 34 got their jabs,” said Yusuf Abramjee who is overseeing the site.
“We had to increase the number of vaccination bays. The queues are long but people are waiting patiently. The efficiency of the volunteers is most commendable,” said Abramjee.
Positive feedback about the drive thru has been pouring in on social media. They are full of praise of the volunteers and the service.
Abramjee appealed to over 18s to pre register before coming to the site. “You don’t need an SMS or appointment. Once registered, just come and get your vaccine.”
There is sufficient J&J and Pfizer in stock. The service is available free. No medical aid is needed.
The drive thru opened last Thursday and as a partnership between the community and the Gauteng Government. Premier David Makhura appealed to all who qualify to get the vaccines.
By yesterday, over 1600 vaccines were administered.
“The turnout today will certainly break all records. There is clearly little vaccine hesitancy from what we we’ve seen today.”
“The volunteer doctors and medical students and staff from the Laudium Community Health Centre are doing a brilliant job. We also thank all the other volunteers.”
Laudium Disaster Management has seconded several members to assist.
