I'm incensed by anti-vaxxers & anti-maskers. We could be over this shit if they had a modicum of common sense & civic responsibility.
My daughter lost her senior year of high school, graduation ceremony, prom, first year of college. My son is now in online high school.
We were virtual hermits for a year. We still can't eat at indoor restaurants without concern. We don't go to movies or events. We're vaccinated, but I'm immunocompromised so we don't know how much protection I have even with a booster.
Their grandmother lives with us so she's another vulnerable person who may not be fully protected
They still barely see friends. My son's social anxiety was improving, but isolation for a year set him back. He's behind in online school because we weren't good on time management
Plus, it's not like having even asymptomatic or "mild" Covid is harmless. Young people esp. are having cognitive issues, heart issues, clotting issues, strokes - & who knows what else - even if they were never seriously ill. No one knows if that is permanent.
Even the moderate "long-haul" symptoms like brain fog, memory issues, shortness of breath, headaches, fatigue are enough to disable people & - again - no one knows if that is permanent. We could have an entire generation of people disabled with chronic illness.
One study found that Covid patients who continue to have neurological symptoms are suffering cognitive deficits & memory issues similar to stroke victims. And no one knows if that is permanent.
And around the corner is the next variant which vaccines may not prevent & which may be deadlier, scarier, more harmful.
We've lost 600,000+ Americans & when you add in the "excess" deaths likely also due to Covid, we've lost more than a million. And counting. Counting faster.
If you'd told me we could lose a million Americans & 1/3 of the country would sabotage efforts to stop a pandemic, I'd have thought you were crazy. But here we are. We have to pull our kids out of public schools & homeschool them just to keep them safe because GOP refuse masks.
Women are leaving jobs or reducing hours in order to be able to either afford private schools or online schools, or to homeschool. I know GOP are thrilled with that. It's killing two of their favorite birds with one stone - send women back to the kitchen & kill public education.
At this rate, we will never stop wearing masks. And if a deadlier variant comes along, we're screwed. Millions of us will be infected & re-infected, incurring physical harm we won't understand for years. This is no minor "flu" that goes away & you're fine.
Thanks, assholes.

If Trump & his ilk aren't held accountable for their corruption & sedition, DEMs won't have a chance in the mid-terms.
I'm as diehard a DEM as you can get - never missed an election - & even I feel disheartened & apathetic now.
DEMs won't vote for GOP. But they may quit voting.
Mind you, I'm not threatening not to vote. I always vote & always vote DEM. I'll fight to get out the vote more than ever because I know democracy is on the line.
But it's tough motivating others if they feel nothing they do matters & that's exactly what I'm hearing right now.
There are 2/3 of us & just 1/3 of them, but we fight against disinformation, voter suppression, gerrymandering, the electoral college & - next time around - cheating via state legislatures taking over DEM districts & overruling our votes. We will still need massive turnout.
I spent hours finding documents so my son can get a driver's permit - his birth cert & SS card, my marriage cert & tax form to prove he's my dependent tho my name on his birth cert is different + several proofs of address. Makes you realize voter IDs are gonna impact women more.
You must prove all name changes & that affects mostly women, who are more likely DEM. Voter ID laws also knock out young voters like college students (also more DEM) who may not have easy access to documents, esp when states like TX allow gun licenses to vote but not student IDs.
And studies have shown minorities are less likely to have qualifying IDs than whites because the laws are purposely designed that way (see previous tweet regarding gun licenses being acceptable while student IDs aren't). Voter ID laws pretend to be neutral, but suppress DEM votes
Is it normal for teens to turn against you for awhile? Both my teens tell me every day all the things I did wrong as a mother & how I screwed them up. I didn't teach them to be independent enough. I didn't cook enough. I didn't push hard enough. Every issue they have is my fault.
And just my fault. Dad was less involved in their lives, but I'm the only negligent one.
They've both become armchair psychologists dissecting all my faults & how I ruined them. I keep telling myself this is a phase & they need to do it to separate from me. But it's killing me.
I'm too sensitive because after they've attacked me - the two of them together lately - I come into my bedroom and sit here utterly depressed.
Deli counter at our grocery store is now closed because they claim they can't find enough people to work.
PAY THEM MORE MONEY. Simple fix.
Meanwhile, retail & restaurant employees are being asked to do "call in" shifts where they can't make any plans or travel far because they MIGHT be called in to work if their workplace is busy.
If they're NOT called in, tho, no pay for that time they gave to the business.
It's really not hard to retain employees if you treat them right. My husband runs a local small business with virtually no turn-over. His employees stay with him & work hard because he offers good wages + benefits + profit sharing + fun perks (which cost him little).
- They pulled him over for "no rear plates." He had rear plates
- They claimed he tried to elude them. He immediately slowed down, put signal on & pulled into well-lit gas station
- They issued conflicting orders, telling him to keep hands out window, yet get out at same time
- He told them he was afraid & asked them to unbuckle his seatbelt so he could comply. They pepper-sprayed him, making his dog choke too
- They told him he "should be afraid" & threatened execution
- They refused to tell him why he was pulled over, beat him & shoved him to ground
And the cops KNEW why he did what he did. One officer admitted later he knew why Nazario had pulled into the gas station - it happened all the time, and was a maneuver often used by people of color.
Because of legitimate fear. They knew he was afraid & trying to comply.
