NEW: House Intel Chair Adam Schiff just left a classified intel briefing on Afghanistan and broke a significant amount of news. Here are some of the highlights.
First he said getting all Americans and allies out of the country by 8/31 is unlikely..
“Given the number of Americans who still need to be evacuated, the number of SIVs, the number of others who are members of the Afghan press, civil society leaders women leaders. It's hard for me to imagine all of that can be accomplished between now and the end of the month,”
Schiff also said he was concerned about the security of the airport in Kabul:
“I think the threat to the airport is very real and very substantial and this has been a concern of mine for, for some days now that this would make a very attractive target for ISIS."
Finally Schiff said that the intel community was very aware that the Taliban had the ability to take over the country.
"the intelligence agencies assessments of the Afghan government's ability to maintain itself became increasingly pessimistic,” he said. (more)
...“Over the course of the last six months. And there were any number of warnings that the Taliban might take over, and some that included a potential of a very rapid, the Afghan government enforces."
Schiff's take was echoed by Intel Committee Member Jason Crow:
"I do not believe at this point, sitting here today, that I have any evidence of a intelligence failure," Crow- a Democrat- told @jeremyherb

FIRST ON @CNN: The 1/6 Committee will ask telecom companies to preserve the records of members of Congress and the Trump family who participated in the “Stop the Steal” rally.
We have the names.
w/ @ZcohenCNN@AnnieGrayerCNN & @WhitneyWReports
The 1/6 committee is focused on those who played a role in the rally that preceded the insurrection. This is the initial list of Members of Congress that they are focused on:
In addition to members of Congress, the committee also will ask to preserve the records of these members of the Trump family.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy just held a press conference where he reiterated his call for Speaker Pelosi to reconvene Congress and pass a bill that would prohibit the White House from pulling troops until all Americans come home. We pressed him on a number of topics..
I asked McCarthy about the bill- which specifically states that troops must stay in Afghanistan but only if it is safe.
McCarthy conceded the bill said that:
"The only way we want troops to be there, is to make sure Americans get back safely and that the troops are safe."
An argument can be made give the huge number of casualties already.. (an argument McCarthy has made) that the situation is already unsafe. And the bill would effectively still give the White House the discretion to make that call.
Fanone and Dunn just emerged from McCarthy’s office. When asked how it went Fanone said “I need a drink”.
Fanone said he asked McCarthy for three specific things:
*Denounce the 21 members who voted against the gold medal bill.
*Denounce Rep. Clyde’s assertion it was an “average tourist day”
*Denounce GOP conspiracy theories the FBI was involved.
JUST IN: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi just informed colleagues she will formally announce plans to launch a select House committee to investigate the 1/6 Capitol insurrection today. As @mkraju reported Pelosi hinted earlier this week that this was coming.
“This morning with great solemnity and sadness I’m announcing that the House will be establishing a select committee on the January 6th insurrection.”
Here is our full story on today’s major announcement of @SpeakerPelosi’s plan to launch a select House committee to investigate the 1/6 Capitol Insurrection. w/ @ckmarie & @jeremyherb:
NEW: @SenWhitehouse issues a lengthy statement clarifying his family’s membership in a private beach club which has been criticized for its lack of diversity.
In his statement, @SenWhitehouse points to this report from Rhode Island station @wpri12 where the club claims the accusations that their membership is “all white” are “false and inaccurate”.
RIGHT NOW: @RepMTG is apologizing for comments she made comparing mask mandates to the Holocaust. She said that her father taught her to take responsibility when she makes a mistake- and in this instance she made a mistake.
.@RepMTG says that she visited the Holocaust museum and said she was learned more about the horrors of that period of time. She said there was “no comparisons to what happened there.”
I asked @RepMTG If this experience would lead her reject the disinformation spread by Qanon followers- some of which deny the Holocaust- she said she did not know of what information was spread by Q followers.
