1/n In my column in Moneycontrol, I look at the government's angst with e-commerce...that the government doesn't like e-commerce has been apparent for some time now moneycontrol.com/news/opinion/a…
2/n At one time, the angst was solely directed towards the foreign Amazon... later it was against both Amazon and Flipkart given that both were owned by foreign players
3/n But of late, the government seems upset with the very notion of e-commerce -- its new draft Consumer Protection (E Commerce) rules are hardly aimed at protecting consumers... they are aimed at giving a leg up to small Indian sellers. Even big Indian players will be affected
4/n The govt is also planning some sort of an open platform that will apparently act as an aggregator for sellers, logistic companies etc and supposedly compete with the Amazons and Flipkarts of the world
5/n There are several problems in the government's current thinking. First, retail is one sector -- the same people will buy online, offline and sometimes go to a shop, and order online from there. After the pandemic specially, most players are exploring a hybrid model
6/n The bigger issue is that retail is a tough game -- a consumer will ditch you if you give him or her bad service a couple of times. I cannot see how an open platform will compete with the seamless service of today's e-comm players
7/n More importantly, why is the govt pretending to be in the consumers interests? Sales are good for consumers. They might not be good for domestic sellers who cannot match the price...
8/n Why can't domestic sellers match the price or quality sometimes? It is not because of e-commerce players but because of business conditions, infrastructure, taxes, regulations etc on the ground... not because of other reasons...
9/n The government's ability to build its own website is pretty suspect... forget an open platform. Moreover, what does it get by treating e retailing as a completely different thing from retailing
10/n There is enough competition in retail. And your neighbourhood shops are not going away -- most big organised players are striking alliances with them for stocking, delivery etc...
11/n Does e-commerce need a separate regulator? Maybe if the regulator is good. In telecom, TRAI has still not managed to get implement better voice and data service or do not disturb services for consumers.. India has many regulators, only some of them work properly
12/n Coming to data -- there are two issues. One, data collected and used for better services to consumers. Every loyalty programme, offline or online, does that
13/n The other issue is data misuse -- for which we need proper privacy laws and should apply to everyone collecting data from people, whether private or government entities...
14/n In essence, I think the government is trying to tamper with something that is working reasonably well -- and the end result will only wreck the sector instead of improving it

1/n The government vs Big Tech is playing out in both the US and China, though the approaches are very different in the two countries. I look at the implications to the tech landscape in my column in Business Standard business-standard.com/article/opinio…
2/n In the US, the Anti Trust proceedings are against four companies -- Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon. Other large companies are not being pursued though older companies like Microsoft and IBM have faced their own Anti Trust investigations in the past at different times
3/n In China, Xi Jinping's action against Ant, Alibaba, Tencent, Didi and others has been swift and brutal. It seems as much for bringing the high flying tech billionaires to heel as it is to curb the powers of the companies

1/n Thread on GDP estimates for Q1 FY22. The 20.1% growth is from a low base -- the economy had contracted 24.3% in the same quarter last year. So we are still playing catch up. Ideally, we should have done far better #GDP
2/n Also remember these are estimates based on data that has largely based on the big organised formal sector and then extrapolated. So it will definitely be revised as more data is collected.. informal data takes a lot longer to collect #GDP
3/n What should worry people is that the composition of growth. While government spending is driving a lot of growth and some sectors like manufacturing and construction is doing well, the private consumption data is worrying #GDP

1/n In my Moneycontrol column today, I look at the race between the US and China to win in Artificial Intelligence...moneycontrol.com/news/opinion/i…
2/n A decade ago, China was far behind. Now they are reportedly ahead in facial recognition, speech technology and several other areas though the US, according to some observers, still leads in others
3/n China is throwing more researchers and more money than the US is. It came out with a focused plan in 2017 with specific milestones to achieve in 2020 and 2025, by which time it wanted to be conclusively ahead of the west in AI

Just to put it in perspective, the NIA had not gathered enough evidence to actually prosecute Stan Swamy but kept him in jail till he died. But the Ansal brothers of the Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy were convicted by SC but allowed to stay out of jail because of age (75 and 67)
I am all for punishing anyone the police have actual proof against. But prosecution should start early and cases should be heard and disposed off. Keeping people in jail as under trials indefinitely makes no sense...
Surely in the seven months he was in jail - I am not counting the time when he started being treated in a hospital for Covid -- was enough time for the police to build a water tight case against him.. or stop objecting to his bail applications if they didn't have proof

1/n In my column in Business Standard today, I look at the quality control and testing of vaccines, which are still a weak link in our vaccination efforts business-standard.com/article/opinio…
2/n Quality control and testing rarely gets much media attention in India except when some big generic drug maker's production facilities get pulled up by the US FDA -- but it is crucial in ensuring that the quality of the drugs and vaccines we take are good
3/n In April, the US FDA realised to its horror that Emergent BioSolutons, the Baltimore-based contract manufacturer of vaccines that was going to produce a lot of J&J and AstraZeneca vacciness had managed to contaminate entire batches..

In my Moneycontrol column today I look at the OECD/G20 initiative on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) which India joined along with 129 other countries. moneycontrol.com/news/opinion/g…
While its broad goal is the same as that of the G7 agreement announced earlier -- to prevent global corporations from using low tax destinations to pay little taxes -- there are many details that need to be aligned
Getting so many countries with very different interests to agree on a common tax agreement is a bit task even if they all agree on the broad principle
