Our understanding of gluttony needs to change so that it is aligned w/ 1st & 2nd commandments, love God & love neighbor as self.
Gluttony isn’t eating ‘too many’ potato chips while binging Netflix. @jnicolemorgan defines gluttony as consumption that harms our neighbor.
It’s so much bigger than what you had for dinner or a midnight snack. We have to frame it around neighbor care.
For example, by consuming strawberries, am I participating in a system that mistreats & underpays migrant fruit workers?
Yes. The answer isn’t to stop eating strawberries altogether. It means advocating for justice for the worker—fair & equitable treatment, a living wage, etc.
Gluttony is a corporate & institutionalized sin, not so much individualized one. (Unless you are eating your neighbor’s food such that they cannot eat themselves.)
Gluttony is consumption that harms our neighbor.

If Nicole’s definition is true (which is what I propose), gluttony is not:
Eating “too much” in one sitting
Being or getting fat
Bingeing in secret
Eating dessert at every meal
Longing for an “off-limits” food
If you need assurance from a thin person that all those things are natural responses of your body to food, not sin…check out Julie Duffy Dillon’s Love, Food podcast.
If you’ll take a fat person’s experience, check out the @fatandfaithful podcast, read Fat & Faithful by J. Nicole Morgan, & read my book, Lovely: How I Learned to Embrace the Body God Gave Me.

Oh, re: “my body is a temple”—ok. Temples just have to exist; they don’t have to lose weight. You are not a fixer upper, no matter what the trolls on frozen say. And before you say, “I want to have a healthy body so I can serve God the best I can,”—
That is ableist. People in all sizes, shapes, abilities, orientations, ethnicities can serve God, no matter what their body is like.
A body is good when it fulfills its purpose, & its purpose is relationship w/ God, self, & others.

Watching #vivonetflix as a Cuban American and I have so many questions!
I love the music and the animation. I love the recognizable Malecón and the Capitolio Nacional…but I want more!
Andrés & María are in their prime when they part pre-Castro (Jan 1, 1959), so if it the plot happens in modern day, they will be around 80, and she just ignores him for 60 years??

The difference between abundance & excess is how we care for our neighbors.
Jesus doesn’t say, “I’ve come that you may have a life in moderation.” No, it’s an 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓪𝓷𝓽 life.
How we share abundance w/ our neighbors is a million times more important than mere “living in moderation”—

Thread: The limitations & fundamental problems w/ #bodypositivity rest in it's manner of dealing with POWER, in 3 fundamental ways: 1) where it places personal responsibility, 2) how it centers those already in cultural power, 3) off whom it profits #fatacceptance #fatliberation
1) PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY: Body positivity places the burden of its mission--being positive about bodies--on individuals. This becomes about managing emotions that affect us rather than dealing w/ the expectations and inequalities that affect our bodies & are out of our control.
Fat liberation address the underlying issues of structural injustice against non-conforming bodies AND makes room for people to express all types of emotions about their bodies and treatment thereof.
