An officer just explained their new progressive enforcement strategy for homeless people which is much like their old strategy.
Basically, still warn, cite, cite, jail. Shelter offered each time. Still trying to push people into ineffective solutions amounts to the criminalization of homelessness.
Maybe @SanDiegoPD will add additional detail to how the policy is different than in the past. Lots of officers out this morning implementing their strategy.
Would also be great to know what evidence they are basing their new strategy off of. I can't find an example anywhere of criminalization working to reduce homelessness.
And it seems like Mayor @ToddGloria is going to keep relying on police to be on the front lines of the homeless crisis. When will we get a leader to take this crisis seriously?
A lot of people will probably choose jail over our shelters which speaks volumes to how bad they think our shelters are.
Mission Accomplished?
It seems like the goal is to remove shopping carts and tents from the streets. Much less focus on getting help for the people.
Guess I'll just start telling people to put up a tent on the sidewalk if they want to get into a shelter. San Diego is #StuckOnStupid.
