Today, we celebrate #WomensEqualityDay, the anniversary of women getting the right to vote.
We’ve progresssed towards equality since 1920, but we have a long way to go.
This thread is not aimed at women. They don’t need to read some white guy’s rant. They’ve lived this.
The gender pay gap inhibits women in every industry and women are frequently denied opportunities for advancement. For every $1 a white man makes:
Black women earn $0.63
Latina/Hispanic women earn $0.55
Native women earn $0.60
White women earn $0.79
Asian women earn $0.87
Women are underrepresented in politics, high-level business positions, and most high-paying industries because of gatekeeping, discrimination, and generally poor treatment.
Women face rampant sexual harassment and are made to feel uncomfortable by men.
The #MeToo movement spotlighted that nearly 100% of women face this conduct.
This is what happens when we build a patriarchal society that encourages objectification and perpetuates rape culture.
1 in 5 American women are the victim of rape in their lifetimes.
1 in 4 women in college are the victim of sexual assault while in school.
In 8 of 10 cases, the victim knows their assailant.
These are not the only ways that women face undue challenges and violence.
But the truth is clear: we simply don’t have an equal society.
Women have made incredible strides towards equality and equity through hard work and uninhibited will.
We as men must be better allies.
So I ask all men to reflect. Consider if you’ve been a part of the problem. Consider if you’ve done your part to be an ally. Consider if you’ve done enough to support the women in your lives.
Then commit to being better. Not just today, every day.
Personally, I know I can do more, and I will.
I don’t want my mother, nor my sisters, nor my friends, nor my neighbors, nor a stranger to live in an unequality society.
Happy Women’s Equality Day.
