9 MISTAKES to avoid while applying for graduate programs ❌

This thread is based on a survey done on 88 graduate selection committees (Appleby, 2006).

@olumuyiwaayo @baba_Omoloro @OpenAcademics @PhDVoice @PhDfriendSana @hapyresearchers @AcademicChatter #phdchat pl amplify:
1. Damaging personal statements📄

❌ Avoid heavy emphasis on your mental health problems:

Grad school is a training program for your academic interests that pays you for your intellectual abilities.

Referring to untreated mental illness or severe trauma may indicate….
that you might not be suitable for grad school.

If you wish to refer to them, be subtle and show you overcame these challenges in your life & how you can build on this resilience in grad school.

❌ Excessive desire to help people:

Selection comms are not impressed by….
statements such as “I want to help all people” or “I want to save all lives”.

Focus more on your academic and professional interests than just the personal motivation to be kind.

Your personal qualities should be highlighted more in your LoRs (not SoPs).

❌ Don’t sound……
professionally inappropriate.

Don’t use clever or cutesy humour, or write statements like you experience a “sense of thrill” every time you see blood or dead bodies.

One applicant wrote: “God has given me natural talents that make me a very good clinician. This was….
demonstrated when I helped my devil-worshipping brother go on the right path, God’s path”.

2. Harmful letters of recommendations (this one’s for potential recommenders)

❌ Undesirable personal characteristics

Grad committees generally look for:

Team-spirit
Resilience……
Intrinsic motivation
Humility
Patience
Integrity
Punctuality and so on.

Mentioning qualities like

Self-centeredness, rudeness, arrogance, immaturity will immediately throw out this applicant.

❌ Inappropriate sources:

Your LoRs should ideally be from your profs……..
supervisors, school counsellors and so on (unless otherwise stated).

Just because your family member or your friend can write you a strong LoR doesn’t mean they are the appropriate source.

Choose your references who are close enough to your academically not just personally….
Ask your prof if they’ll be able to write a “strong” or “enthusiastic” letter for you.

A good recommender will decline your request if they don’t know you well enough.

That’s better than sending an average letter.

You know that you have to look for another source……..
3. Lack of information about the program

❌ Program research:

It becomes evident that you have not done a thorough research on the faculty members, programs if you write a generic SoP.

If you can’t clearly tell why THIS program or THIS faculty matches your aims the best…..
you are unlikely to be selected.

Plus, make sure you are not writing about a faculty who has retired, died or has been relocated.

Always provide evidence that you are a good fit by talking about any research/lab experience/conferences/workshops that you’ve been a part of……
4. Poor writing skills 📝✍️

❌ Avoid any grammatical or spelling or formatting errors.

These are the signs of substandard writing.

Use the following software to enhance your documents:

@Grammarly
@IntelligentEdit
@ProWritingAid
@languagetool

Also, ask your profs once..
if submitted well in time, your own supervisors can give you great feedback on your errors.

❌Poor writing skills.

Make sure that you don’t write a cluttered and scattered story of your experiences.

Weave them into a coherent, meaningful narrative. Own your story………
❌Misfired attempts to impress

Don’t write anything that may be perceived as insincere flattery by the committee.

Don’t simply write that they are the “best school in the world”, be more intentional & specific.

Do they give you access to certain skills/equipment? Mention……
research oriented assets that you will gain from the department.

Do not blame other academic institutions to impress the one you’re applying for.

The INTERVIEW between you & your potential PhD supervisor before formally applying

is really CRUCIAL⭐️⭐️⭐️

But you may blow off this opportunity by not preparing the right way:

A long 🧵 on how to do it RIGHT

@olumuyiwaayo @Oludeewon @PhDfriendSana @baba_Omoloro @PhDVoice
1. Don’t stress too much

If you’ve been invited for a zoom/Skype call, it’s a SOLID sign that they like your research ideas sufficiently.

They may want to assess additional things over the call such as:
• Your ability to articulate your research ideas orally

As a PhD scholar, you need to have engaging oral and written communication skills.

While they are certainly impressed with the way you write about your research, they want to know whether you can speak about it as well.

You FINALLY received a positive response to your email from ur potential advisor💪🏼📧

Ensure that you reply to them the RIGHT way so that you don’t mess it up!

Things to keep in mind while replying.

1/8. Don’t make them wait for too long.

Star ⭐️ your email that you sent them so that you can easily spot when the respond. You should ideally respond to them within the same day.
2/8.They would have probably simply encouraged you to apply for the program (but didn’t mention anything about Skype call).

Gently ask them about their lab, recent research interests & what ideas are currently brewing in the lab via email so that you can mention those in ur SoP

How to write a research proposal for grad school applications?

The following research proposal won me the Swiss govt fellowship @Swiss_FCS

A thread

@TundeTASH @olumuyiwaayo @AaronAkpuPhilip @baba_Omoloro @SamdGreat01 @OpenAcademics @PhDfriendSana @AcademicChatter @Oludeewon
1/n What is a research proposal?

Simply stated, it is a document that

- lets you highlight that you can
address your research interests in
a detailed and scientific manner.

- presents a concise & coherent summary of your proposed research.

-shows that you are…
sufficiently familiar with the lab of your choice.

-most importantly, it lets you present how your research will contribute to the collective good of the society.

2/ What are the components of your research proposal?

- A tentative project title.

~ Approx 10 words……..

How to prepare a CV for grad school applications?

A thread 🧵

I used this format and won the Swiss government fellowship and a PhD offer from UW Madison!

@olumuyiwaayo @OpenAcademics @AaronAkpuPhilip @PhDVoice @SamdGreat01 @baba_Omoloro @PhDfriendSana @Jamaticulus #phdchat
1/ CV stands for “Curriculum Vitae” which means the course of your life.

In your CV, you can include information on
-educational qualifications
-research interests
-research experiences
-conferences/workshops
-honours & grants
-professional and extra-curricular experience..
2/ A CV is a longer document than a resumè because a resumè is a very specific summary of your skills and experiences that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Standard CV length is 2-2.5 pages (but it may vary based on your academic history)…….

Mistakes that I made while applying for the Swiss government fellowship.

- Started too late

I had received all the information by August last year, but I started contacting profs in mid October.

This gave me very less time to work on my proposal but I succeeded because…….
the prof was kind enough to modify my proposal in the last hour.

You might not luck out like I did, so start now.

- Didn’t read the document requirements properly.

It was one day before the deadline that I realised that I also had to write an SoP for my application……
Thankfully, I was able to craft a good one, but I had to sacrifice my entire sleep because of it. Not worth it.

- Waited till the deadline to submit

For this fellowship, you are likely to submit the hard copies of the documents to the embassy (like me) via courier…..
