1. Don’t stress too much

If you’ve been invited for a zoom/Skype call, it’s a SOLID sign that they like your research ideas sufficiently.

They may want to assess additional things over the call such as:
• Your ability to articulate your research ideas orally

As a PhD scholar, you need to have engaging oral and written communication skills.

While they are certainly impressed with the way you write about your research, they want to know whether you can speak about it as well.

Ensure that you reply to them the RIGHT way so that you don’t mess it up!

1/8. Don’t make them wait for too long.

Star ⭐️ your email that you sent them so that you can easily spot when the respond. You should ideally respond to them within the same day.
2/8.They would have probably simply encouraged you to apply for the program (but didn’t mention anything about Skype call).

Gently ask them about their lab, recent research interests & what ideas are currently brewing in the lab via email so that you can mention those in ur SoP

1/n What is a research proposal?

Simply stated, it is a document that

- lets you highlight that you can
address your research interests in
a detailed and scientific manner.

- presents a concise & coherent summary of your proposed research.

-shows that you are…
sufficiently familiar with the lab of your choice.

-most importantly, it lets you present how your research will contribute to the collective good of the society.

2/ What are the components of your research proposal?

How to prepare a CV for grad school applications?

1/ CV stands for “Curriculum Vitae” which means the course of your life.

In your CV, you can include information on
-educational qualifications
-research interests
-research experiences
-conferences/workshops
-honours & grants
-professional and extra-curricular experience..
2/ A CV is a longer document than a resumè because a resumè is a very specific summary of your skills and experiences that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Standard CV length is 2-2.5 pages (but it may vary based on your academic history)…….

❌ Avoid heavy emphasis on your mental health problems:

Grad school is a training program for your academic interests that pays you for your intellectual abilities.

Referring to untreated mental illness or severe trauma may indicate….
that you might not be suitable for grad school.

If you wish to refer to them, be subtle and show you overcame these challenges in your life & how you can build on this resilience in grad school.

Mistakes that I made while applying for the Swiss government fellowship.

- Started too late

I had received all the information by August last year, but I started contacting profs in mid October.

This gave me very less time to work on my proposal but I succeeded because…….
the prof was kind enough to modify my proposal in the last hour.

You might not luck out like I did, so start now.

- Didn’t read the document requirements properly.

It was one day before the deadline that I realised that I also had to write an SoP for my application……
Thankfully, I was able to craft a good one, but I had to sacrifice my entire sleep because of it. Not worth it.

- Waited till the deadline to submit

For this fellowship, you are likely to submit the hard copies of the documents to the embassy (like me) via courier…..
