Fun fact: @WaffleHouse is known for its disaster preparedness and resilience, so much so that @fema uses the #WaffleHouseIndex to measure the severity of natural disasters.
WaHo open w/full menu 🟩
WaHo open, limited menu 🟨
WaHo closed 🟥
From its company HQ in Georgia, @WaffleHouse monitors severe weather in its very own "storm center," which also serves as a base to communicate with restaurants in the path of severe weather, monitor the company's supply chain, & quickly deploy "jump teams."
These quick-response teams, which include contractors, utility experts, restaurant operators, suppliers, and others, travel to hard-hit areas with portable generators, gasoline, essential personnel, & more.
And, they help hold down the fort & fill in so local staff can recover.
🚨Also, fun fact: WaHo has its own mobile command center — an RV named EM-50 after Bill Murray’s urban-assault vehicle in the 1981 movie “Stripes”🚨
Finally, each WaHo can quickly shift to one of four “disaster menus” in times of crisis: no water, no power, limited (when other are restaurants are open), & emergency (when they’re truly the only place open). Prices are rounded to the nearest 10th cent to make math easier, too.
The #WaffleHouseIndex is brilliant because it's easy for folks to understand: WaHo – open 24/7, 365 – prioritizes resilience, and so it's almost always open. So, if a WaHo has to close, then you know things are bad.
Plus, it can signal utility service disruptions...
🟩 WaHo probably has power or is running on a generator.
🟨 WaHo probably doesn’t have electricity or running water, but can still cook on a gas stove.
🟥 WaHo can't open because there's no gas to keep the grills running.
Props to @fema for recognizing and embracing this concept, and for looking to private-sector partners like @WaffleHouse to quickly gauge how businesses are faring in severe weather events.
Because here's the thing:
How a business like WaHo prepares for a natural disaster is similar to how a federal/state/local government plans for the same event.
For each, supply chain resilience is key.
There's an important lesson here:
Effective resilience, response, and recovery depend on the joint efforts of not just governments, but also the private sector.

The #BPW on Wed. will consider a proposal to flat fund the county Disparity Grant program. Unlike other state grants and "aid," the disparity grant is designed to promote equity across jurisdictions to overcome disparate tax bases. #MDpolitics (1/8)
The program promotes fiscal equity by providing noncategorical state aid to less affluent counties with proven local income tax effort. It serves to ensure that counties, who rely on LIT for substantial revenue, are able to generate sufficient yield to fund #education, (2/8)
public safety, roadway maintenance, and community services.
#Counties have made difficult tax rate decisions based on the state law governing these grants - to undermine them would be especially untoward even during times of mutual fiscal strain. (3/8)
