Tell me you own a VW without telling me you own a VW. Wacha niangushe thread on character development. So i have had a #VW#GolfGTI with the #EA888Gen3 engine for about 5 months now. It is a 2014 yom.
Before that, i owned this for 5 years. A 2008 Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart. Now, in the 5 years i owned this car only three things went wrong.
My spiral/clock spring went kaput and the car had an SRS warning light. I replaced it for free after ‘borrowing’ from a salvage Colt.
My coil packs also died and had a terrible misfires. I replaced with another used set for less than 8,000.
My brake discs became warped so I replaced with a new set
Generally the car was solid. Tough as nails. It came to Kenya with 105,000KMs and i sold it with about 210,000kms on the clock. It still runs well. Everything else was the usual maintenance and service.
Let’s move to the Golf, in 5 months of ownership, i have spent more money on maintenance than i did on the Colt in 5 years. This is what i am calling character development.
And everything that has gone wrong in the Golf is something that i expected to go wrong. I had done my research on these cars, i knew what weaknesses it had.
Waterpump/coolant pump leaks are one of the most common issues. Affects all EA888 Gen3 cars. These include, Audi Q3s, Q5s, S3s. Basically, if you own a post 2013 2000cc Audi or VW, you will get this problem at some point.
First month of ownership. I replaced my coolant pump and thermostat housing & coolant shut off valve to sort out that issue. None of these parts were available locally, so i had to have them imported at an extra cost.
A quick google search will show you this is a widely reported failure point on these cars.
A few weeks ago, the car started misfiring like a burukenge. And i knew in my heart, the infamous Audi/VW ignition system issues have caught up with me. 99% of the time it is either plugs (which is okay) or coil packs.
Mine turned out to be coil packs as you can see from the linked video. Although i replaced both plugs and coil packs instagram.com/tv/CTF0UIQoOMp…
The other costs have been the usual maintenance things. DSG Gearbox service which is not cheap, Engine Service (Done this twice).
The work done doesn’t seem like too much but the problem with having a car that is still relatively new for our market is that parts are bloody expensive and difficult to find locally.
So the next time someone asks me, mbona hujaeka tint?
Ni juu sina pesa ya tint. 😂. I have always prioritized mechanical/electrical soundness of a car over luku.
Mbona unaenda pole pole sana kwa rumble strips na bumpy roads? Because i googled the cost of my suspension and almost cried.
The Mazda CX-5. Perhaps the most misunderstood vehicle in Kenya this year. It has gotten a lot of flak recently over issues that are easily remedied by preventative maintenance and taking your car to the right workshops. It is actually a fantastic car! THREAD!
It is so good that it is the current best selling midsize SUV in Australia. I like Australians because they tend to appreciate sturdy & practical cars. This car is going nowhere. Mazda keeps on making it better.
Now, back to Kenya. 3 engine options are available keeping in mind that we are generally importing 2014 models. There is a 2.5 litre petrol(it has no turbo). There is a 2.0 litre petrol (no turbo as well) and a 2.2 litre diesel (turbocharged)
Forester XT SJG Review! Is it the perfect all rounder? Theoretically speaking, yes. Practically speaking, maybe not.
What did I love about it? It is rapid for a car of that size. The ground clearance is very very good. You can probably drive on 99% of Kenyan terrain. It is extremely spacious. If you are a petrol head dad with two kids who you need to take to the park, you will love it.
What didn’t I like about it? Parts are extremely expensive. More expensive than some more premium brands from Japan and Europe. If you’re not careful it can run you broke very fast.
Edu man. I don't know where to start. He is a smart guy. He is learned and comprehends issues so well! Anyway, we managed to find his relatives in Nairobi. I cannot disclose the location for his mental wellbeing. The sister was in tears when she saw him
He has a place to stay for now. He can clean up and have a change of clothes. That was our first priority. We are in talks with car yard owners and garage owners for jobs and opportunities. We're scheduling a few meetings
There a dentist by the name Kinyanjui who has offered to carry out a free dental procedure on him. (God bless you Kinyanjui). As you probably saw, he doesn't have his front teeth. He wants to get that sorted chap chap.
I have interacted with Edu for a few months now. He lives in the streets and we occasionally talk about cars He is extremely enthusiastic about performance cars. I'll thread a video of him just talking. See the last video in the thread for more info.
