#LicenseRenewal Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and RTMC are briefing the media on new measures to address the drivers’ license renewal backlog

#LicenseRenewal MEC Jacob Mamabolo says he welcomes the announcement made by Mbalula last week extending the validity of expired drivers licenses nationally to end of March 2022

#LicenseRenewal MEC announces it will be embarking on a “Request a slot campaign”. This will run in phases, it will start next month but will gain momentum in October. The final phase will be next year Jan/Feb and wrap up in March.

#LicenseRenewal Mamabolo says there are 40 driver's license testing centres in the province. He says they need more to service the growing number of citizens.

#LicenseRenewal Mamabolo: The campaign will be supported by better infrastructure .. the problem is not having enough facilities.

#LicenseRenewal Mamabolo: The RTMC is appointed as licensing authority, and GMA (Gautrain Management Agency) will also be appointed as licensing authority.

#LicenseRenewal Mamabolo: We are appealing to people to honour their license renewal slot. Make a booking - don't wait until March.

#Afghanistan DIRCO says government notes the overtures made to consider receiving a number of Afghanistan refugees who have sought refuge in Pakistan. The request is that they be accommodated in South Africa en-route to their final destinations.

#Afghanistan DIRCO: South Africa is already home to a substantial number of refugees and is seized with addressing their needs. Most of them already benefit from the Social Assistance and free medical health programmes offered by our country.

#LilliesLeaf The iconic Lilies Leaf Farm in Rivonia, Joburg is closing for good. The museum cited financial difficulties and the struggle to raise enough money to keep it going as the main reason for its closure, which was made worse by COVID-19 and lockdowns.

#LiliesLeaf Between 1961 & 1963, Liliesleaf served as the secret headquarters and nerve centre of the ANC, SACP, MK & the Congress Alliance. Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Kathrada, Mlangeni, Mhlaba, Govan Mbeki, Goldberg were among those arrested by apartheid police in July 1963.

#LiliesLeaf is yet another heritage treasure that has been lost to the pandemic. Other sites such as the Apartheid Museum and Athol Fugard Theatre have closed down in the past year.

Bonginkosi Khanyile is back in the Durban Magistrate Court, for further proceedings in his bail application following a postponement last week, the state is opposing bail. NM

Anton Booysen, Section commander for crimes against the state investigations in KZN, is on the stand testifying why should Khanyile not be granted bail. #BonginkosiKhanyile

Booysen says Khanyile's release would be a risk, due to his previous conviction.

#AlexStabbing A 15-year-old who allegedly stabbed a fellow grade 8 pupil to death in Alexandra, has been arrested.

#AlexStabbing The pupil arrived at the local police station with his father, where he handed himself in last night.

#AlexStabbing It’s alleged that the teens had a fight and the suspect stabbed the pupil with a sharp object yesterday afternoon - during the lunch break.
