#LilliesLeaf The iconic Lilies Leaf Farm in Rivonia, Joburg is closing for good. The museum cited financial difficulties and the struggle to raise enough money to keep it going as the main reason for its closure, which was made worse by COVID-19 and lockdowns.

#LiliesLeaf Between 1961 & 1963, Liliesleaf served as the secret headquarters and nerve centre of the ANC, SACP, MK & the Congress Alliance. Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Kathrada, Mlangeni, Mhlaba, Govan Mbeki, Goldberg were among those arrested by apartheid police in July 1963.

#LiliesLeaf is yet another heritage treasure that has been lost to the pandemic. Other sites such as the Apartheid Museum and Athol Fugard Theatre have closed down in the past year.

#LiliesLeaf The managers of Liliesleaf have closed its closure a demonstration of the "abject failure of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to provide the financial support so desperately needed by the sector as a whole.

#LiliesLeaf Minister Nathi Mthethwa and his department did not comment on the financial struggles Lilies Leaf faced when they announced earlier this year, neither has he offered any comment as it announces its permanent closure.

#LiliesLeaf Members of the public and those in the arts, culture and entertainment industry have for quite a while lamented the closure of many sites that are key to SA's heritage and dear to many.

#LiliesLeaf In a desperate plea to save the museum just a few days ago, Lilies Leaf Trust CEO Nicholas Wolpe says he reached out to Premier David Makhura via WhatsApp to ask for government's urgent intervention. Read the message here attached:

Bonginkosi Khanyile is back in the Durban Magistrate Court, for further proceedings in his bail application following a postponement last week, the state is opposing bail. NM

Anton Booysen, Section commander for crimes against the state investigations in KZN, is on the stand testifying why should Khanyile not be granted bail. #BonginkosiKhanyile

Booysen says Khanyile's release would be a risk, due to his previous conviction.

#LicenseRenewal MEC Jacob Mamabolo says he welcomes the announcement made by Mbalula last week extending the validity of expired drivers licenses nationally to end of March 2022

#LicenseRenewal MEC announces it will be embarking on a “Request a slot campaign”. This will run in phases, it will start next month but will gain momentum in October. The final phase will be next year Jan/Feb and wrap up in March.

#AlexStabbing A 15-year-old who allegedly stabbed a fellow grade 8 pupil to death in Alexandra, has been arrested.

#AlexStabbing The pupil arrived at the local police station with his father, where he handed himself in last night.

#AlexStabbing It’s alleged that the teens had a fight and the suspect stabbed the pupil with a sharp object yesterday afternoon - during the lunch break.
