In South America, infections are generally declining π, with a few exceptions: in Venezuela cases are plateauing, and in Suriname, transmission π¦ has increased for four consecutive weeks.
When you look across regions, the Americas π remain disproportionally impacted by this pandemic: we are home to 4οΈβ£ of the top 10 countries with the highest number of cumulative cases, and nearly a third of all COVID deaths have been reported in the Region.
While every country in our region π has begun administering COVID-19 vaccines π, immunizations are following the fault lines of inequality that have long divided our region.
More than 60% of people have been fully vaccinated in Canada, Chile, and Uruguay, and over half of the US population has received the full course of vaccinations π
But, unfortunately, countries with high coverage are the exception in our Region π
Delays in production, export bans and limited vaccine π supplies have meant that many countries are still awaiting the doses π¦ they expected months ago.
Vaccination π rates remain in the teens in several Caribbean and South American countries and coverage is still in the single digits in Central American nations like Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
With this in mind, I want to lay out 3οΈβ£ priorities to accelerate vaccine coverage in our region ‡οΈ
β³οΈ We need more π donations
β³οΈ We need to let public health guide our pandemic π¦ response
β³οΈ & we need countries to deliver π as soon as they arrive
PAHOβs Revolving Fund is already pooling demand from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, to secure more doses π¦ in the coming months and address current gaps.
Just last week, we launched a new platform that convenes partners around a shared vision of boosting state-of-the-art vaccine π production in Latin America and the Caribbean π
COVID infections π¦ are accelerating across North America, where routine surveillance has confirmed that the β³οΈ Delta variant has become the dominant strain based on the variant of concern sequences reported over the past month.
Cases and deaths continue to rise in Canada π¨π¦, Mexico π²π½, and the United States πΊπΈ, as adherence to public health measures relaxes, the Delta variant π¦ circulates, and vaccination π coverage varies within countries.
COVID infections π¦ are accelerating in North America, driven primarily by a surge in cases in the southern and eastern United States πΊπΈ and in central Mexico π²π½
More and more, disease trends are showing a region divided by vaccine π access.
In countries π with adequate vaccine supply π¦, infections are decreasing π; in places where vaccine coverage is still low, infections remain highπ
As of this week, our region π reported nearly 74 million cases and 1.9 million deaths from COVID-19 π¦ , accounting for more than a third of COVID cases and more than 40% of deaths reported worldwide this week.
And while new cases are down β¬οΈ nearly 20% from last week, many countries β including the U.S. πΊπΈβ are seeing a resurgence of infections π¦
Before we start our briefing today, I must acknowledge the event that unfolded this morning in #Haiti leading to the untimely death of President Moise Jovenel.
