There are some news circulating in media giving out some statistics about #BRTPeshawar which need clarification.
For instance, various news giving out conflicting numbers for revenue from 39.9 to 399M. The actual revenue for 2020-21 was 734M, despite all the covid restrictions.
The success of BRT is measured by service comfort and affordability, and Peshawar BRT is being operated on the same concept. BRT all over the world runs on subsidy except a couple of systems of Singapore and Hong Kong,as the target is economic benefits and not financial benefits.
Initially Peshawar BRT was planned to be operated at a fare of Rs. 50 to have maximum financial income, however the vision of the Govt of KP was to subsidise the working class and low income residents in the difficult time of Covid pandemic, ---
and for that reason the fare level was kept to be as low as Rs. 10, which is the lowest in the country comparing with any other mode of transportation, while providing world class service.
Prime Minister of Pakistan also appreciated the provincial government for keeping fare low to benefit the neediest people of the society.
Peshawar BRT serves the maximum number of passengers compared with any other system in the country with averaging about 160,000 passenger /D.
Other system in Pakistan i-e Lahore Metro Bus System, Multan Metro Bus System and Rawalpindi Metro Bus Service serves from 40,000 to maximum of 110,000 passenger per day. While Peshawar BRT serves almost twice customers averaging 160,000 commuters compare with other systems,
but the revenue expenditure gap is less by 50% comparing to other systems. It shall also be noted that being 3rd generation system, the feeder route passengers in Peshawar BRT, which average about 50,000 per day, are not counted in the passenger count, ----
while the other systems are counting these in.
Lately ADB conducted site survey of the system, where female passengers showed the highest satisfaction. The female workers and students mentioned that they used to pay 300 to 400 in taxi for their commute work and college,---
and now they pay only Rs 15 to 20.
For the next fiscal year the project revenue expenditure gap is projected to be 2.79 Billion considering the covid restrictions, however we are working to minimize this gap ---
by taking actions such as adding commercial revenues, advertisement revenues, reducing sale tax transfer payments, minimizing dead mileage by operationalizing HayatAbad depot. By taking these actions the revenue expenditure gap will be reduce to 1.7 Billion.
The Peshawar BRT has the maximum number of riders and the minimum subsidy per passenger compared to any other system in Pakistan. Also, this system has the maximum positive impact by reducing carbon foot print by 31,000 CO2 tons per year.
