20 small things that make me happy.

A thread...
1. Waking up early morning and before anything else, sipping a glass of water, for 15 minutes.

2. Picking up the clothes to wear for our daughter.
She calls it "kapde choose".
And its a thing.
3. Reading the newspaper.
We do not have a TV at home and I do not track any news.
So all news is delivered a day late to me.

4. Chole Bhature and Meethi Lassi
Nothing to be added here. Just felt!
5. Writing with the Uniball Air Pen.
It is incredible how a good pen can ease your life

6. Playing tennis.
The sport tests me on my focus.
The movement tests me on my fitness.
The daily commitment tests me on my progress.
7. Writing.
It helps me pace my thoughts.
It forces me to pick from all my thoughts.
It demands me to structure my thoughts.

The more I write, the clearer I think.

@david_perell has taught and inspired me a lot.
8. Chew gum.
To fight my sugar cravings.

9. Last meal at 630pm
I sleep without feeling heavy.
I wake up light and energetic.
And I say no to most dinner invitations :)
10. An afternoon nap
Few things give you a sense of control and being "rich", than the ability to take an afternoon nap, because you feel like it :)

11. Singing aloud while driving
I look forward to driving, purely so that I get to sing out loud.
12. My silent-buttons mouse
The fact that when I click my mouse, it doesn't make that click sound anymore.
Such joy! :))

13. Playing Plot4 with our son
He beats me hands-down and that makes me so happy.

14. Feet in hot water
Especially at the end of a day where the game of Tennis was intense.

15. A good knife and peeler
Nothing makes me happier in the kitchen than cutting vegetables with a sharp knife, or peeling with a good peeler.

16. Books
I am constantly blown away by the fact that most books cost less than 500 rupees and can change your life.

Psychology of money by @morganhousel
Skin in the Game by @nntaleb
Atomic Habits by @JamesClear
Mindset by Carol Dweck
17. Mangoes
No matter how down I am, a juicy sweet mango change my mood instantly :)
18. Head massage
Even with my thin almost balding head, I go for a haircut every month JUST SO I could get the 5 mins free head massage.
And then he asks me the question I can never say no to, "Sir, 30 min ka head massage kar doon?"
19. Paper planes competition
Every weekend, all marketing pamphlets with the newspaper fight for the ultimate warikoo paper plan competition.
From the 13th floor, whichever plane flies the longest wins!
20. Putting things on my calendar
I LOVE to put things on my calendar, so that I forgot about them thereafter, only to be reminded by my calendar.
In my 20s, I was convinced that only big expensive things could make me happy.
I chased them.
Got some.
Only to realize they didn't make me happy.
Today, I realize that nothing liberates you more, than being content with less.
To be content doesn't mean you do not desire more.
It means you are thankful for what you have and patient for what's to come.

I was lost at 24.

A thread…
“You have a degree in physics. You are now thinking of dropping out. No one will ever hire you. Don’t do this”

These were the words of a friend, a friend who meant well, in Sep 2003.

I had called him because he had changed careers after physics.
And I thought he’d understand.
For the longest time I know, I wanted to become a space scientist.

And here I was, at the age of 22, in the US, enrolled in a PhD program, on a 100% scholarship.

This is what I had preparing for my entire life.

15 audio books, if you do not like reading.

A thread...
1. 12 Rules for life

Narrated by the author @jordanbpeterson, this phenomenally simple yet powerful book will challenge a lot of your beliefs.

2. Can't Hurt Me

@davidgoggins is not just a masterful author, he is an exceptional narrator too.

His hitting life experiences hit me, made me realize my privileges and left me with the biggest lesson - no one can hurt me, if I don't agree to be hurt!

5 principles we lived by, in my previous startup
1. Hiring Principle

Attitude >> Experience >> Education

We designed our hiring process to check for culture fitment, attitude, curiosity.
Which meant looking at the resume much later. Instead starting with understand the person.
2. Leading Principle

Every manager needs to have a 1:1 with their team member, at least once a month.

And the question of whether a 1:1 did happen, will be answered by the team member and not the manager.

If they felt it was more of a review and less of a 1:1, there was no 1:1

41 observations about life, in the week I turned 41.

A thread...
1.
It is easy to respect people from a distance.
True respect is when you get to know them, and still respect them.

2.
People assume that a verified Twitter profile is someone smart. Ironically, the blue tick says, "this person is EXACTLY who they claim they are"
3.
Your guides, your mentors, your managers are not there to fix your mistakes.
They are there to guide you, so that you are eventually able to see your own mistakes.

4.
Not every problem needs to be solved.
Some need to just be heard.
Just be felt.
Just be empathized with.

A set of 20 books, to understand the world.

A thread...
1.
Hands down the most powerful, yet simplistic description of evolution.

2.
This book bravely attempted to answer the "Why" of human existence and I personally think did a commendable job!

8 real life examples of the power of compounding

A thread...
Below I share my life habits that have compounded over time to yield magical results.

I feel extremely uncomfortable though, because this means I will have to talk about the highs of today.

I hope you all see me not for who I am today, instead where I started from.

Habit 1: Public Speaking

As a kid, I was terrified of the stage.
My first appearance was a disaster, in Class 7, when I went up on stage, blurted out what I had to recite, only to be told later that my lips were moving but no voice came out from my mouth!

Then in class 11...
