THREAD on the RECALL election in CA and comparisons to the RECALL election of Gray Davis in 2003. It’s important for context because of the media coverage that feels very negative for Newsom
THREAD
1/
Gray Davis, for those that remember, was Governor of CA from 1999-2003 and had a successful career in CA as a solid public servant. He won his election to governor with 57.9% of the total vote and the GOP candidate (Dan Lungren) received 34.8%.
Gray ran as a centrist Democrat.
2
Gray focused on schools and education which, at the time, was a big topic in CA (among other things). Gray was recalled with just 2 months left in his term of office.
And as y’all know, Schwarzenegger won the recall election with just ~960K votes more
3/
Total voter turnout was 61.2%. Based on the total vote tally of 9,413,488 voters, that would put the population around 18/19 Million roughly around that time.
We sent out 22 Million ballots and so far have close to 6 Million returned (based on rough reporting #’s)
Because these numbers have been not clearly identified yet, the media is focusing on the LACK of ballots returned and not the fact that ballots are coming in at a better rate in 2021.
Better tech, faster processing, etc., 5/
In addition, the media is focused on Newsom and how he might not be able to win.
Gray Davis, as a comparison, had a Electrical Grid problem happening, and a perceived corruption issue that was put out there by Republicans. One in particular.
Darrell Issa.
6/
You see, Darrell Issa bankrolled the recall effort and as you can see from the information, was actually scared to run against “TheTerminator” (IMO) and that as many of us know about Issa, has a very checkered path 7/
Gray Davis wasn’t a bad person. He actually did good things for CA and education. It got messy with the energy crisis CA faced and that he had hired people that worked for energy companies (Enron, etc). Outside of that the usual critics took over and Ariana Huffington was one.
Ariana used her newspaper and corporation status to be relentless about the energy issues and the GOP platform used Issa and others to push against efforts to support Davis.
It also helped that Arnold was coming off as a strong guy with his movies,
9/
Even when Arnold had no public service experience whatsoever. It was a cluster phuck of storms and both Democrats and Republicans voted to recall Davis.
10/
FUN FACT: There were 154 candidates running against Davis in the recall. As you can see by the winner, he only won 4.2 Million votes out of 18 M.
No other candidate in any office in CA was ever recalled until Davis.
Even Ronald Reagan had a petition for recall. 11/
So to my point of this information. Yes, 22 Million people received ballots. 80% of the population in CA and most counties vote by mail.
Newsom has been a good governor. He’s not perfect, but until COVID and Biden’s win, he was OK with voters in CA
12/
COVID disinformation began at many state levels and people who knew that it was time to pounce on GOP voter angst about
masks and vaccines and, and, and. Their first petition failed. The 2nd one took. There are roughly 47 individuals running for Governor.
13/
Currently polling is in favor of Newsom.
A large number of voters in CA have NEVER heard of Elder until the media brought him up outside of CA. Republican voters I know didn’t know who he was or where he came from.
14/
So, if the indication by the media is that this is close, maybe it will be.
Also, Newsom won with 61.2% of votes. With 12.5 Million voters voting out of 22Million. His votes were 7,721,410.
Have ~48% of voters that DON’T VOTE……
15/
My point.
By comparison to other recall elections, we are on track with good numbers as a total.
By comparison to the other recall, we already have received more votes than those voting in the Davis recall for governor.
16/
If you are still here:
There may be an uptick on voters who have angst about masks, etc., but we have the same if not greater Democratic voter that is pushing back harder than ever.
They also understand the partisan corporate media and what they are doing.
17/
Rely on your vote. VOTE.
We can still win this. Just have some faith.

Instead of a long thread, I’ll just make a comment about a convo today with a friend at the golf course.
We caught up, chatted about politics in general and she told me her worries about the CA Recall election being full of fraud.
1/
I listened, then told her I was a Poll Inspector getting ready to go set up my precinct after leaving the course. She asked me the following: 1. Are voting machines really connected to the Internet?
A. NO
2/
2. How can I be sure fraud isn’t happening?
A. There are so many verifications and 2 person auditing at the precinct level first, then to the elections office, then to the State level, everything has a paper trail and verification by numerous people.
3/
Charges were dropped in April. Schiller, Newsom’s brother-in-law is the SON of the co-founder of Boies Schiller Flexner. If there is domestic violence happening, Melissa Siebel should seek help.
WELP, it was bound to happen and it did.
THREAD
Today, the stats for Shasta County are as follows: 1/
The largest variant detected in our county is the Delta Variant now.
Additional updates show that with are in a HIGH RED transmission area.
We have - 16,227 total cases, 234 total deaths, 131 new cases which is consistent here. 3/
So, to my point.
My husband was notified on Sunday evening that he had to get tested for COVID. Evidently, someone who was vaccinated, tested positive in the office along with 10 others. A total of 14 are being quarantined until they test negative.

As many of you know (or maybe not) I’m a poll worker for CA elections of all kinds.
Last year I worked the Federal Election/State too., and this year the RECALL election.
Here’s some updates for those that want to know….
THREAD
1/
For whatever reason, Twitter isn’t allowing this thread for me to send.
So I’ll do it this way
Let’s not forget…..
3 out of 9 member of the Board of Governor’s are Democrats or appointed by Joe Biden.
The other 6 are all TFG appointees
That’s why DeJoy is still there. 1/ about.usps.com/who/leadership…
Now, @jheckmanWFED might be able to explain this better than I can. Ron was appointed to fill the remainder of a 7 yr term that was expiring in Dec. 2020. He’s in a holdover year.
That would suggest that his position expires in Dec 2021.
2/
Next up
John Barger
Lucky for us he’s set to have his term expire on Dec 8, 2021 and I would bet we have someone already to be appointed in the wings by Joe Biden 3/
Q. 2 - Can you confirm these Dominion machines are connected to the internet during the voting period.
A. NO. They are never connected to the internet.
Q. 3 - Data was exposed at a conference related to voting machines by Dominion, what did you do to secure them? 2/
A. (In part) We have used Dominion machines since they have been operating. We know them well. We purchased new machines in 2002 and 2018. All software has been updated and routinely tested before each election
