.@co2detective 24 hours of co2 with the cooperation of my son’s preschool, which we appreciate very much. The chart is bounded by outside air.. picking up and dropping off the sensor. The levels aren’t great but there is some good info here. 1/ Image
We can see how the system clears CO2 overnight.. though don’t know if it was running full out. Can anything be inferred about the overall transfer rate here I wonder. 2/ Image
Unfortunately there are no windows by design, just a door that opens onto a street. They open it when the kids are at recess and this seems to work pretty well.. the easiest adjustment might be to put a fan in door to try to clear the entire room here.. 3/ Image
Clearly this does exchange air. Potentially they could try to do it at another time (nap time?) as a reset but there’s a good chance that would be against regulations.. 4/
I need to ask for a daily schedule but my guess is that this peak is lunch. Do CO2 levels spike when masks are off? I’m not sure how the math works. Obviously it would be good if they could vent during this time but the same limitations apply. They do have two hepa filters.. 5/
I would definitely add a Corsi-Rosenthall cube or two (why not?) and put it near the kids when eating. Of course this won’t change the CO2, but perhaps this data may emphasize that need.. that this is the riskiest time. 6/
There’s a nap-time in there and I hypothesize that this is that lull which would be interesting. The kids don’t wear masks, but perhaps they breath less as well (and are spread out to the greatest extent possible). I think the nap is less a problem than lunch. 7/
I asked my kid if he wore his mask during nap-time as a trial-balloon and he looked at me like I was an idiot. “I don’t wear a mask when I sleep!” Obviously he could, but I’m not sure this is really the main problem. 8/ Image
I’m not sure exactly what goes on the rest of the day but my guess is that over time that there will be pretty stable pattern. Perhaps the late day peak is transient? There is a late day snack, so perhaps that is it. 9/
I’ll just send the graph to the school, note the key features (the most noteable is the mid-day clearance). It seems like the overall levels are higher than we would like? Perhaps the hvac system could be tweaked? Mostly after seeing the trouble you’ve had.. 10/
.. I’m grateful that the school is supportive of monitoring. They said that perhaps they would get their own units (there are three classrooms) and having that would help them make adjustments and adjust their protocols. 11/
In general this school does a good job (with other protocols as well). Much of the problem is intrinsic to the overall situation, which is.. not great. 12/12

We have been building homes in rural Haiti over the last year and have completed 8 of 15. In the recent earth quake, these homes survived. I’m just starting a gofundme so we can begin the next 7. I committed myself to share it by EOD. #tweet100 gofund.me/fe3a9846
2/ Check out the link! It’s the first time I’ve ever run such a drive so if anyone has experience or feedback I’d love to hear it. The project origins: At the beginning of the pandemic lockdowns in spring 2020 our family first had to adjust to the shock to our own lives..
3/ but as we adjusted to the change our next thought was our friends at @MPM_Haiti mpmhaiti.org. Years ago, when I was first wondering how to go about charitable giving my friend @matt_belcher said I should talk to his friend Christian, who co-founded the charity..

The majority of children under the age of twelve may be infected by the delta variant before a vaccine is available to them. I just donated 1000 kf94 masks to our local mutual aid. If you have or know a child in school consider doing the same. behealthyusa.net/collections/sm… #tweet100 Image
Apologies for the lack of chill. I hope that by doing the #tweet100 challenge that I might diversify my engagement a little bit, but when push comes to shove I had to start here: this is the most important thing I know. In modeling funded by the CDC.. medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
.. 25%-50% is the *lowest* infection rate we can expect over the next three months in elementary schools given reasonable assumptions (the green and orange-ish lines). Three months is close to the fastest the fda might get an approved vaccine out to children under 12 months. Image

0/ *brief* summary and implications of imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial… , a preprint from imperial college in December on evolution of b117 during the second English lockdown of November of 2020.
1/ The key finding was they looked at 42 regions for the 4 weeks of lockdown in Nov.. so 168 samples, and tracked b117 and non-b117 cases. In 34 both increased, in 36 both decreased. In 97 non-b117 increased and b117 increased. In only ONE did b117 decrease and non-b117 increase.
2/ They concluded that b117 had a transmission advantage large enough to frequently continue to grow even in situations in which non-b117 declined. They also tested, and rejected, other explanations such as being able to reinfecting previously infected individuals.
