Guidelines for Ganesh Sthapana at home:

Ganesh Chaturthi, is celebrated as a birthday (actually rebirth) of Lord Ganesha, as it is celebrated on fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapad, it has a term Chaturthi in it. 1/11 Hindumediawiki thread on Ga...
The rebirth corresponds to the incident where while Ganesha in a human head form tried to block passageway of Shivaji, resulting in rage of Shiva and loosing his head. Thereafter, when Shivaji was consolidated ,Shiva gave him a new birth attaching an elephant infant's head.
There is not ancient norm related to this celebration, according to latest date, this started from Shivaji's Time 1630-80, after that followed by Peshawars, from 1740-1820, thereafter it started loosing its glory when it was again renewed by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893.
there is no limitation in size of Ganesh idol, you can go from the smallest 1-2 feet to 108 feet too. There is no Shastra behind the size of Ganesh idol in history. And for proof, there are videos on youtube explaining that size is not important but the placement & direction is!
So you can place ganesh facing east, west.If possible, select north, as it is the abode of Lord Shiva, father of Ganesha. But, when you offer prayers, your face should only be towards east – the vastu preferred direction.
you should never place Ganesha idol or locate pooja rooms in the south or southeast directions. ‘Yama’ and ‘Agni’ rule these directions respectively. So, if you place ganesh idols on these directions, you won’t be getting the blessings you wish for.
Also never place ganesha idol near wahsroom, bedroom, under the stairway.

The patri is offered to ganesh idol. and kalash is placed on right side of idol. combination of 21 leaves is called patri.
after idol is placed spread five paan leaves with 1 supari, 1 badam, 1 halkund,1 supari and rice on top. Then put haldi-kumkum on each of them.

After all these setup, you can lift cover of ganesh idol.
There are lot sites will tell you the process of puja.

Words of wisdom from Sri Ramana Maharishi about Desire and Aatma :

Atman is verily what you call your Self. It is pure Consciousness / Awareness. It is the source within you. It has no other attributes. Image
You are identified with the body and the mind (ego) and hence you think you are limited. When you transcend this body/mind complex, you'll see you are pure awareness.
Ambitions, love, fear etc. are all extensions of desire. Desire comes from ignorance - of the fact that by nature (as your true Self) you are complete.

The incompleteness stems from identifying with the body, mind, ego and are not attributes of the Self (Atman).

"Verily, all this universe is Brahman. From Him do all things originate, into Him do they dissolve and by Him are they sustained. On Him should one meditate in tranquility... 1/5 Bhakti Yoga in Vedas : Hindu Media wiki Threads on Twitter
For as is one's faith, such indeed one is; and as is one's faith in this world, such one becomes on departing hence. Let one, therefore, cultivate faith.
