A rant/thread.
Bear with me…please.

I’m absolutely gobsmacked by what I’ve been seeing and hearing…especially these last few weeks. People who I would normally consider sane, educated, stable, well-informed, community minded, are now peddling blatant disinformation.

1/
Many of them, and those that defend them, are passing it off as harmless ‘differences of opinion’.

Really?
If so, I’m missing something.

I just recently read a report that COVID patients are pulling vital resources away from paediatric patients, patients with…

2/
…heart conditions, patients who need certain surgeries, etc. According to that report, most if not all of the COVID patients were/are unvaxxed.
Widely accepted research indicates that these hospitalizations were avoidable.

I’m sorry, but ‘difference of opinion’ doesn’t…

3/
…cut it. Difference of opinion extends to things like music (Rush is a great band; fight me) and chocolate bars (Three Musketeers is chocolate coated baby poop…don’t @ me).

Beyond that, it’s something else entirely.

As Ricky Gervais stated, “your opinion doesn’t…

4/
…equal my facts.”

The Theo Fleury School of Medicine doesn’t equal Johns Hopkins.

My dad’s oncologist is renowned for her expertise is dealing with his particular brand of cancer. She just wrote him a prescription for his third COVID shot.

Good enough for him and me.

5/
I’ll roll the dice with her brain over that of TikTok / YouTube science any fucking day.

I happily subscribe to the philosophy that medical care involves an element of service / care for my fellow human beings.

Hey, I fully understand fear, skepticism, and hesitancy.

6/
But when those things turn someone into a selfish asshole who is only concerned with protecting their own skin, and knowingly spreading disinformation…all under the guise of independent thought…

7/
…and patriotic freedom fighting…then we have bigger problems…much bigger.

What happened to us…and our sense of community service? When did rabid individualism take over? When did trust in much smarter people die out?

I’m disheartened with it all.

My two cents.

Slimy, greasy strategy by a slimy, greasy politician. But are we really that surprised? From the moment this chump entered the political ring, didn’t we foresee stuff like this?

This guy on the basis of being the ‘anti-Wynne’…and to a large extent…

…it was successful. There was lots of talk about gravy trains and ending the party with tax payer money. But you’d have be pretty naive and / or willfully ignorant to not see the cronyism and the grift.

Hwy 413 is a prime example. Look who stands to benefit.

2/
Ford buddies Ron Taverner and Dean French…more examples of the grift. And the list goes on.

- Taylor Shields

- Rueben Devlin
- Charles McVety
….to name but a few.

This is an open message to:
@AndreaHorwath
@StevenDelDuca
@MikeSchreiner

It was kinda funny when Doug Ford showed up hawking cheap beer. Kinda. But it stopped being funny a long time ago.

Fast forward to 2021.
We now have a massive pile (words purposely chosen) of…

/1
…failures, hostility, disinformation, and outright attacks on the very things that many hold dear in this province: healthcare, education, care of our elderly, key elements of our social safety net, and the environment to name but a few…

/2
…and much / all of it has been in the interest of privatization, corporate greed, cronyism, self-service, self-promotion, ego and pure profit.

In addition, this government has sowed division and hate. Racists have been subtly, and not so subtly, nudged into action.

Someone sent me this. I’m very touched by it. And that person knows how much I appreciate it. So I’m following their lead by paying it forward.

If I didn’t mention you specifically, it’s nothing personal. Rather, I hope it’ll eventually reach others via the same process. Image

In light of the sudden outcry for the (potentially) premature return to school by people who are ‘newly’ concerned about youth mental health...

I’ll echo the thoughts of many friends/colleagues when I say:
“Where were you before now?”

I’m reminded of a student...
...of mine from earlier in my career. She struggled with mental health issues and often flirted with suicide. In addition to reporting the situation (as my job required), there were a number of occasions where I counselled her, and encouraged her to ‘stay with us’...
...and to keep moving forward. I specifically remember telling her that the world was a better place with her in it.

Thankfully, she did ‘stay’, and is now married with kids of her own.

Her story is a happy one. But I’ve also witnessed students (too many)...

An education thread.

This past week, as a ‘start-to-the-day-reflection’, I shared one of those “If the World Was A Village of 100 People” type videos with my class.

I’ve seen them before. But the stats are always sobering.
Eg.
15% are illiterate.
13% have no clean water.
20% don’t have electricity. 25% don’t have adequate shelter.
75% don’t have internet access.
90% can’t access post secondary education.
A staggering 70% are malnourished.
1% are starving...a ‘small’ number, but that translates to 75 million people.

What does it all mean?
It means that despite the struggles of the past year...with lockdowns, masks, sanitizing, virtual this and that...in many ways, we’re very lucky.

In no way does this minimize the suffering that COVID has brought...particularly with those in LTC homes, those who have...
