Safeguarding lawyers ask about "gender questioning children"
Trans rights lawyers respond about "trans children" 🤨
Robin White talks darkly about orgs that are "not supportive of trans children" raising safeguarding issues & other children's privacy
Says other children just have to get used to there being children in school using opposite sex facilities (but may be some balancing issues)
Dr. Bianca Jackson says that innocuous questions about what sex you are can be transphobic harassment.
Both talk about parents as "supportive" (i.e. gender affirming) or "unsupportive"
Robin says in the school premises regulations about toilets, changing and showers "there is no definition of boy or girl, no definition of sex "
Does it include trans boys and trans girls?
"the regulation are silent about that" .. "why shouldn't they be allowed ?"
At 26 mins Robin describes an "impossible situation" of a female child who has short hair, wears shorts, "presents male" - and told to use the girls facilities
"imagine the effect of a natal girl who has this apparent boy walking into the girls toilets"
This both (1) recognises that girls do feel uncomfortable with actual boys (whatever their hair length and clothing in the girls) in female only space and
(2) is just utterly regressive. 🙄🙄🙄
I agree with Robin that the EHRC should produce clear guidance to schools on how to protect everyone's rights.
But in the meantime there is DFE guidance (not mentioned) which the says provide alternative changing provision if needed gov.uk/government/pub…
The idea that schools should keep a child's sex secret from other children and staff is incompatible with safeguarding and consent.
Girls should not be being pressurised or tricked into to undressing with male students and vice-versa.
I wish this had been explored more.
Guests on the podcast say beware of guidance produced by lobby groups then go on to recommend guidance by Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence and Mermaids!
Robin spoke darkly of "other guidance" ....
She may have been thinking of the this from Sex Matters and Transgender Trend!
The @fawcettsociety 's new code of conduct isquite pointed (and authoritarian)
Section 1 "women and girls in all their diversity" is code for gender id
Section IV suggests @ ing a Trustee could be grounds for expulsion
OLD--> --> NEW
Members have not been invited to vote on the new code of conduct which means that members must not disagree with the replacement of sex by gender.
And public debate will not be tolerated.
Obviously harassment is harassment, but being on Twitter is an invitation to be @'ed into conversations by strangers -- and being a Trustee or senior manager of an NGO seeking to influence policy is being a public figure.
As the foreword notes Robin Moira White has an obvious personal interest in laws and rules that would make it difficult for women to say no sharing single sex spaces with males
Nevertheless claim to have set out the law as it currently is, and not just wishful thinking....
From the Easy Reading version of the Welsh LGBTQ+ Action Plan consultation
- it is so unsafe to tell people they cannot trust their own eyes about who is a man and who is a woman.
Queer means..... ? (I still don't know)
And as for the plus...?
Here is the not easy reading version - it still doesn't make clear why people "wanting to reject specific labels" should need to be the business of the state.
