modern au where lwj and jiang yanli are both dance at the same studio, and are the best of friends.

one day, wwx waits outside. it’s tinted with one-way reflective window films. lwj sees him and almost falls as he's doing a pirouette.

lwj has just been swept off his feet.

wwx is also a photographer and often offers to help his shijie take some photos for her social media accounts. he also helps her with recording for her choreography.

his subject has always been his shijie thus far. seems like he's about to have another one soon.

she KNOWS that both her best friend and brother are in love. how can she not? it's in their eyes. they're fooling no one, except for themselves.

but jyl doesn’t pry because there no point to tell them if they don’t see it for themselves. right? right!

jc, who tries t be nonchalant about these things, also keeps shut his mouth about lwj. jc, like shijie, also wants them to get together because wwx and lwj belong together. like how jc puts it—two cherries on top of a cornetto. don’t judge, it’s just the way he puts and sees it.

wwx pretending he doesn’t know how to dance and pretending he has two left feet (he really doesn’t, musicality is in him), just so he could get lwj to teach him how to do a waltz or a racy latin routine to cheryl cole’s parachute (he loves that song very much)

wwx: lan zhan, how about you teach me how to dance?
lwj: okay.

he agrees because wwx is his best friend’s brother. what kind of best friend would lwj be if he doesn’t help wwx out? preposterous! of course he’d help! that’s what a best friend of jyl would do—help her brother out.

at the end of their first session, lwj already knows that wwx /knows/ how to dance. because a dancer will always be able to /see/ another dancer. wwx may not be a dancer-dancer per se, but he understands music, the counts, the lyrics. and oF COuRse lwj only thinks wwx is

being mischievous and wants to tease lwj by pretending he doesn’t know anything: "lan zhan, what's an eight-count?". and oF CoUrse lwj indulges because this way he’d be able to see wwx more. so the two just... roll with it. or rather, dance along along with it.

"lan zhan, can you teach me how to do a c-walk?"
"aiyo, lan zhan. this is so difficult!"
"i wanna learn how to do a piroutte!!! am i ready?"

"okay," lwj answers to everything.

wwx may have just fallen more in love with dance, and the one that teaches him.

and as a photographer, wwx offers to take photos of lwj and even videos. you know, to help him out. surely not because lwj is so beautiful that he wants to have photos of him. because that doesn’t sound creepy at all. wwx ends up taking lots of candid photos, of lwj just standing

there thinking of what moves to incorporate in his new performance number, of lwj wiping his sweat, of lwj drinking his water, of lwj stretching, of lwj tying his hair into a messy top knot. still perfect, regardless.

little moments like these, biggest impact to the heart.

comes the day when wwx wants to record a video of their class, wanting to see his form and how far they’ve gone, how much he's improved. and wwx being very mentally occupied these days, thought that he’d already transferred all his files to his laptop. files being: photos of lwj.

as wwx sets up the sound system, he tells lwj to prop the camera on the tripod. lwj does so.

he sees the playback button on wwx’s camera. he knows he shouldn’t press it. but he also wants to know what kinds of photos wwx likes to take. does he like taking photos of

plants? of sceneries? maybe food? what types of food does he like? or maybe... someone he likes? lwj wants to know. oh, does he want to know.

a beat passes and his thumb is on that playback button.

with a breath, he closes his eyes and presses it.

a soft beep.

all he sees are photos of himself. of him... being so candidly him. he feels his ears burning up. is he embarrassed? shy? afraid? nervous? all of the above.

he finally realises, that (surely just one of) wwx’s favourite subject, is indeed himself.

wwx sees the frozen lwj behind the camera and then he also freezes because, /FUCK I DID NOT TRANSFER THE PHOTOS/

wwx: l-lan zhan! i can explain!!!!
lwj: no need.

there and then wwx thought, "fuck I’ve ruined it all shit shit shit aiyooooo!!!!"

AND THEN!

lwj: does... does wei yi—
wwx: no no no, lan zhan i’m sorry!
lwj: oh.
wwx: lan zhan?
lwj: i apologise. i must have misunderstood.
wwx: misunderstood what?

lwj: it is nothing.
wwx: what were you going to say before i interrupted you?
lwj: does wei ying not like me?

time stands still.

wwx: no, lan zhan!
lwj: no?
wwx: oh god what am I DOING. okay okay let me BREATHE first.
lwj: okay. wei ying, please breathe.
wwx: I DO like you lan zhan, a little too much i’m afraid. i should be the one apologising. i swear i’m not a stalker!

lwj: no need to apologise.
wwx: oka—wait, what?
lwj: i already knew you can dance.
wwx: when??? 🤔
lwj: the very moment i put my hands on your waist.

/THE VERY MOMENT HE PUT HIS HANDS ON MY WAIST. MY. WAIST./

wwx: so you knew ever since our first dance session?
lwj: mn.
wwx: then why did you not call me out? why still proceed with our sessions until today?

lwj closes the distance between them.

"because i like wei ying too."

and for the rest of their "dance session", they hug, they makeout, (thankfully the studio is tinted from the outside), wwx laughs a little louder, lwj smiles at that, they hug more, they makeout more.

they also take a photo of themselves to commemorate this wonderful day.

dancer!lwj and dancer!wwx who come up with their own choreography to the music that they both love. they dance not just to the symphony and beats of the music, but they dance to the symphony and beats of their hearts. and their hearts? they beat as one.
