listening to Erin O'Toole's presser (played on delay by @CBCNews, since there had been overlap between the leader's speeches)

His answer to reporter's questions regarding what Premier Kenney could've done differently, and O'Toole is using the false dichotomy of health v econ
2/
I guess that answers the question of what he would have done, if he'd been PM this past 18 months. We'd have been in much worse shape. It's this flawed thinking that has resulted in the crisis here in Alberta (IMHO)

This article is from Nov. 2020, perhaps a bit out of date now - but the concepts discussed are still relevant. Also, good data included theconversation.com/data-from-45-c…
4/
the above linked article includes analyzing:
45 nations from OECD, using Covid-19 data & econ indicators. Looks at: effects on GDP per capita, exports & imports, consumer spending, & nation wealth.

"It’s not a zero-sum game"
7/
glad to hear the reporters press Mr. O'Toole on why he won't answer their questions regarding Alberta
9/
Mr. O'Toole tried to pivot from questions about Alberta by trying to falsely claim Mr. Trudeau has not treated all the provinces the same. In truth, the fed govt has been very generous w us here in Alberta cbc.ca/news/canada/ca…

When people react strongly on Twitter to a headline, it's usually that they didn't read the article. See my next tweet for some quotes from the article, that provide nuance & context ...

(abbrev) "Justin Trudeau said Sat that he remains open to getting rid of Cda's FPTP electoral system if his party re-elected, but added it's not a priority since there's no consensus on the issue."

(they did hold cmte mtgs, do studies, but no consensus among diff parties)
3/
(from article Mr. Coyne is reacting to) "Trudeau said, however, that he would not favour proportional representation as an alternative, saying the system "gives more weight to smaller parties that are perhaps fringe parties."

(In other words, more legislative pwr to PPC)

- when did Trudeau say he was against taxing billionaires? Mr. Singh just said both Mr. Trudeau & Mr. O'Toole are against taxing the billionaires. This presser is nuts. Too many disingenuous statements. Discouraging that there are voters that believe him.

Heather McPherson just said Jason Kenney has not handled the pandemic well, but also Trudeau sat on the stage and said "yeah, you're right, it's the best summer ever"

Seriously? I don't recall Trudeau sitting on a stage w Kenney & saying directly to Kenney "yeah, you're right"

David Common asks CPC Michael Barrett: "do you believe Premier Kenney has done a good job with the fourth wave?"

He doesn't directly answer. Rather, he pivots to what he thinks Trudeau did wrong. But won't comment on Kenney

Alberta's premier just began speaking. I'm in shock. It's only 6:04 - that's 4 minutes, not 40

watching on CPAC cpac.ca/episode?id=2df…

but also available on Alta website alberta.ca/news.aspx

slightly nasty tinge (IMHO) to this speech by the CPC leader right now

(listening on @CBCNews)

wouldn't recommend tuning in. It's a combination of misleading statements, accusations of being divisive - while being extremely divisive with the content of this speech, and so on
2/
Mr. O'Toole just asked about tone of his speech. Reporter pointed out "you started this campaign by claiming you were more positive, but you were anything but, in this speech. You made personal attacks on Mr. Trudeau."

O'Toole doesn't answer, asks Cdns to compare platforms
3/
now another reporter is asking if Mr. O'Toole is concerned his victory is slipping away, based upon the tone of his speech today (paraphrased)

reporters keep asking the fed NDP leader what he'd do differently, asking for specifics - what would his govt do that Trudeau has not done. They ask if he's consulted the communities.

(doesn't answer - see next tweet)
2/
Mr. Singh's answer to being asked for specifics of what he'd do differently than Liberal govt: "It's the passion and conviction. I just don't believe after six years, it shouldn't have happened."
3/
Reporter: "Your platform has money for Indigenous communities. Where would that money go, that you have in your platform?"

He doesn't answer. Just pivots to "Trudeau bad"
