There is so much on my mind as we begin the post-mortem takes.
I will not lie, Im sad and disappointed. Not really by the new government of the day, but by what the people clearly endorsed with their votes... and rejected with their silence.
I'll explain.
Young people, more than perhaps other blocks, were disenfranchised. But, if we're going to keep it 100, way too many didn't even show up to the polls.
While I expected it, McAlpine lost. We have not elected an independent candidate in 19 years. If he couldn't do it.. who can?
There appeared to be little consideration for the candidate in the ballot, only the party. We have steamrolled yet another administration out of office and given them a massive majority. It makes for great memes, but also for a less diverse House. When will we learn?
The Coalition of Independents is now the country's leading third party, encouraged by the fact that they all but buried the DNA. Imaginative they may have been, the COI ran a very Trump-esque campaign, complete w/ lies, stolen material and promises that insulted our intelligence.
That last one hurts most, because at least the DNA attempted to be serious and not promise us $100k a year for doing nothing. I guess that's why they didn't get the votes, hey?
I am sympathetic to 3rd parties, but if the COI is the best shot we got... I'm not encouraged.
In celebrations last night, and frankly throughout the campaign, there was an unacceptable disregard for the circumstances we're in. The pandemic is the worst its ever been, and people are mingling in celebration of politicians they'll probably complain about in a few weeks time.
Sorry for the overwhelming negativity this morning - there is good to share but I felt like I needed to get some things off my chest. #242votes
