The TRAI has released its final recommendations on improving India's broadband connectivity and we hope to see them being in operation soon! #AccessToInternet#4GForAll
Earlier, the minimum download speed for broadband was only 512 kbps — insignificant for true access to services we require today. Today, it's 2 mbps.
Although India still doesn’t have a minimum upload speed, we’re finally on the path to progress. #AccessToInternet#4GForAll 2/n
In 2020, @TRAI released a Consultation Paper around issues of broadband speed & connectivity.
Our comments focused on:
🕸 Including a higher minimum download speed & a minimum upload speed.
🕸 Developing digital infrastructure in a dynamic public-private partnership model. 3/n
In 2021, when we submitted additional comments, our major focus was on ensuring that the upcoming broadband infrastructure caters not only to users in urban areas, but also serves users in rural and other disadvantaged areas. #AccessToInternet#4GForAll 4/n
Plans were also made to avoid frequent interruptions in services due to accidental damages of underground infrastructure with a 'dig once' policy that encourages utility providers to communicate their digging plans in an area to other providers before applying for permission! 5/n
A key goal of connectivity infrastructure projects is to increase the reach of digital networks - at low rates - to those who live without the internet.
To help with this, the ‘Common Ducts and Posts Development Agency’ (CDPDA) will be set up to plan & develop WiFi services. 6/n
But the CDPA will not be the only entity to develop such infrastructure. If private entities also want to develop these facilities, they will be allowed to — after necessary registration.
Our suggestion to encourage direct incentives for ISPs was also partially accepted! 7/n
Although @TRAI didn’t accept all of our suggestions, it still made important changes.
Now, it is essential that @DoT_India begins to operationalise these recommendations, so that the benefits of high speed broadband can be made available to all Indians! #AccessToInternet 8/n

Yesterday, IFF assisted @tmkrishna's hearing before the Madras HC, in one of the few petitions challenging Part II of IT Rules (on social media). Madras HC found ‘substantial basis’ in assertion that the application of IT Rules to intermediaries may violate Article 19(1)(a). 2/n
Senior Advocate Rajshekhar Rao argued on behalf of Mr @tmkrishna. After hearing Mr Rao’s submissions on Part II, the Madras HC issued an order stating that “if there is any action taken in terms of Rules 3 and 7, it will abide by the result of the petition.” 3/n
Oftentimes when people’s data is breached, it’s probably because they haven’t implemented the basic digital hygiene that goes a long way in protecting your data.
There are some simple steps you can (and should!) take to up your #DigitalSecurity game. We might sound like a broken record, but:
🕸 Set up 2 Factor Authentication
🕸 Create strong passwords
🕸 Use a password manager
🕸 Stay alert for phishing scams!
More details in 🧵 👇🏽 2/n
First, on passwords:
✅ Use unique passwords for each account
❌ Don’t use: DOB, partner/parent’s names or any info easily available in the public domain.
✅ Aim for at least 15 characters & a mix of letters, numbers + symbols.
✅ Use passphrases: they are harder to crack. 3/n
Hearing Update: The petitions challenging the constitutionality of the #IntermediaryRules are listed for final hearing as item no. 44 before the bench led by the Chief Justice at the Madras High Court today. 1/n
IFF has provided legal assistance to carnatic musician, author and activist @tmkrishna in his petition challenging the entirety of the Rules. 2/n
The issues raised in these petitions are extremely important. We have sought that the entirety of the Intermediary Rules, 2021 be struck down because it violates the freedom of speech, freedom to practice any profession, and the right to privacy of individuals. 3/n
The #Agristack is a collection of technology based interventions in the farming and agriculture sector that hold the potential to result in dramatic changes. Get an introduction to the project & its potential benefits and drawbacks 👇🏽 2/n
The #Agristack project will include farmers':
- Personal details
- Land profile
- Production & financial details
Its issues mainly revolve around its algorithmic nature that can spike loan rates & reduce agency of farmers. The risk of exclusion is also present. 3/n
It was reported that for BPL & anthyodaya cardholders, vaccination was compulsory to receive benefits. In the face of outrage, the #Karnataka DC clarified that no such order was passed. While this immediate threat has diminished, we've seen multiple such statements recently. 2/n
In the present context of the COVID-19 pandemic, to deny people essential rations (or other government benefits) for being unvaccinated would only exacerbate the existing food and nutrition crisis.
IMPORTANT: Are such steps even legal? We broke it down for you. 🧵 3/n
