I've been a hiring manager for the last 4 months, trying to fill 3(!) roles on my team for a specialized skillset (I'm looking for folks with machine learning experience to come and help us improve international search) here are some things I've learnt 🧵
In terms of targeted hiring, i've seen high success rates of responses by sourcing candidates myself. LinkedIn Recruiter Lite is my go to, I narrow down by skillsets.
I look at their profile & see where can this person bring value to my team. Usually things like what they are currently working on, draws me to them. I rarely look at their educational background or in most cases care less if they have any CS degree.
I look at 1.Where are they now, is that industry a close match for us? 2. What are they working on? 3. Does this person seem like a relevant fit for my team?
The last question is hard to say through a LinkedIn profile, but I send them a personalized message asking for a quick 30 minute "informal" call to sync. The word informal is important, people are looking to connect & learn more, at times.
Some shy away if this seems to be a more formal interview setup. But a lot of folks are excited to talk & learn more about my team & company. During this call I tell them about myself & the work my team does and also learn about them a bit.
There's in general a lot of hesitation for POC & folks from underrepresented groups to usually make big jumps especially if they are in a safe environment already & might be less likely to apply to a position. All I'm providing is just an entryway to a potential position.
There is immense value when a hiring manager reaches out to folks, I personally rarely respond to hiring messages, but when it is from a hiring manager, I try to always respond to them. End of the day you might be establishing a connection at the very least.
I've already hired someone through this method. I got her excited about the role & my team & she ended up applying & passed the interview panel. 🎉 One more person made it through the process, but decided to take another opportunity.
I consider it a success that A. I can get these calls with folks and B. some actually go through the process. This fuels me & keeps me going even though hiring can be a drag at times. What are some ways you have found success with hiring? #hiring#Recruiting
