Almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV.
There are many types of HPV.
Some HPV types can cause changes on a woman’s CERVIX that can lead to cervical cancer as time goes on, WHILE other types can cause genital wart
HPV usually causes no symptoms so you can’t tell that you have it.
HOW DOES CERVICAL
CANCER PRESENT?
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most commonly presenting
symptom of cervical cancer.
- Bleeding in between periods, bleeding after menopause, i.e. after stopping of periods,
continuous bleeding through the vagina
- On or off throughout month
abnormal vaginal discharge,
- Excessive or smelly or blood mixed.
- Bleeding post intercouse
rarely, severe pain, leg swelling, leakage
of urine or stools through vagina uncontrolled.
For most women, HPV might be SELF LIMITING (ie it will go away on its own); However, if it doesn't, there are a chances that over time it may result to cervical cancer.
OTHER FACTORS CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK of CERVICAL CANCER
•Having HIV/AIDS
•Smoking.
•Using Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) for a long time (4+ years)
•Having birth to many children (4+ yrs).
•Having many sexual partners
How to Keep Your
Cervix Cancer- Free
Age 9-14 (HPV vaccine):
2 shots over 6-12 months
Age 15-45 (HPV Vaccine):
3 shots over 6 months
Most effective before sexual activity begins.
AGE 21-29 (Pap Test):
Get a Pap test every 5 years
starting at age 21.
AGE 30-65 (Pap Test or HPV Test):
Get a Pap test or HPV test every 3 years.
Or get both a Pap and HPV test every 5 years.
