Serious question. If we’re supposed to agree that the 850,000 PPC folks don’t “deserve a voice” in our democracy, what do we do about them? Just pretend they don’t exist?
I mean, did people in Germany sit around and ask themselves this very question when the Nazi party started to gain steam? Whatever their response was, clearly it was wrong. We should , you know, try to do better.
What I’m reading is “we just can’t tolerate it”. Okay. Yes. Obviously. I’m not asking whether we should tolerate intolerance, I’m asking how we tamp it down and keep it from proliferating, not whether it’s good or bad.
I’m wondering what “we just can’t tolerate it” means when broken down into meaningful actions.
To be clear to those of you who don’t know that I often blurt out things I’m thinking about to generate a discussion - I’m not advocating for PPC to be in our parliament (yuck) but it occurs to me that if we just stick our fingers in our ears one day they WILL be.
And societies that won’t ask themselves how to solve hard problems and resort to simply ignoring them or hating those who represent them are likely to … well, get bigger problems.
Ten years ago most people in Texas would have laughed at you if you’d told them that Roe would be overturned in their state, abortions would become criminalized and women could be jailed for having one. And here we are. Waving away threats doesn’t make them actually disappear.

Only in Canada would the conservative press think “Should the guy who just won the election resign?” is a not a batshit crazy poll question.
It’s just sad. They do this because their conservative readership will return a majority of yes answers which they will then “report” on in the form of an article which their affiliates will run intact or with a new narrative using the poll.
Eventually they start citing each other to provide legitimacy. At some point someone at the G&M, Fife or Coyne or Urback will write a story or column on the topic. The PostMedia group will then cite *that* article for a fresh round.
Every time I see this video I’m reminded of the article I read just after Trump was elected where the writer said something like “Trudeau explains quantum computing while Trump repeatedly fails the Turing test on live television”.
After that I read many articles by disgruntled tech folks explaining that no, Trudeau does not “get” quantum computing which then went on to explain why the simple language used was not just insufficient but we were obviously idiots to buy the hype.
Repeated proofs that Trump was intellectually unable to grasp complex ideas while Trudeau displayed, at least a cursory understanding, were met with ridiculous defences of Trump tied to his wealth/business “success” and beautiful wife. Or something.
Just after Kenney was elected my daughter’s RCMP husband was transferred to Alberta. She freaked out. I mean, she panicked. I tweeted about it and eventually had to take down the tweet because so many con trolls took offence to such “stupidity”.
They were able to reorganize things and he took a hardship posting in northern Newfoundland. (They *love* it there and want to stay forever).
Today I was thinking that she could be one of those dead people.
And it just hit me so hard.
My son is there, got COVID last year, nearly died and is fortunate enough to have the wherewithal to essentially entomb himself and work from home.
The thought of one of my children being in danger because of politics makes me a little insane.
Many provinces have had NDP governments who, once in power, govern in a way that is not distinguishable in any way from Liberal governance. Why vote NDP? I mean, what are you hoping for? What is it you think they’ll bring?
And how many times does it take for the experiment to fail before logic kicks in? Personally I think they need to, to borrow a phrase, go big or go home.
Conservatives aren’t going anywhere, now or ever, and while you can disagree with their worldview all you want, they’re not only a legitimate political faction in this country, they’re the largest one. Since this is the case, I believe that O’Toole remains leader.
