"The very thought of 'relentless self-promotion' sounds anxiety-inducing to me. Any tips?"

That's a question we received yesterday during @SquadCastFM & @NCBalto72's workshop on avoiding burnout for podcasters.

Find my answer(s) in this thread👇👇

Here are a few things to AVOID when doing self promo things on social media:

1⃣Dropping links to your latest episode willy nilly w/ no explanation or context
2⃣Logging on once/day for the sole purpose of self-promo
3⃣Only following other podcast-related accounts
Here are some things you SHOULD do when self promoting on social:

1⃣Drop links/info when someone asks for a show/info in your niche.

Do that by following hashtags that pertain to your podcast's topic. Interact w/ those people. Become twitter friends. Make a name for yourself.
2⃣Spend time on social media

I know this is what a lot of people are trying to avoid lately but unfortunately, this is the reality.

You've got to put in the time and establish yourself.
3⃣Follow & interact with podcasts in your niche

Definitely follow accounts like @PodcastMovement, @Podnews, & @InsidePodcstng.

But, if you're a podcast about beluga whales, follow accounts related to marine life, ocean conservation, animals, sea animals, fish, aquariums.
4⃣Tweet about what you discuss within your episodes, not just about the fact that you have a new episode out

i.e.: New episode about beluga whale habitats?

Great. Post a long thread about your findings. At the end of it, link us to your latest episode so we can learn more.
5⃣Champion other twitter accounts / podcasts in your niche

Try not to see them as competition, but rather as potential collaborators.

Oh no! You just discovered another podcast about beluga whales. That's an opportunity!
6⃣Make sure your social media looks good.

We do judge books / podcasts by their covers.

Use @canva to create a color and font palette. Stick with those colors and fonts.

Most importantly, resize images to fit what that social media platform asks for.
There are TONS more where these came from. Please let me know if you have any questions. My DMs are wide open.

Have fun!✨

Here’s what I do every week to promote @SquadCastFM’s podcast, Between Two Mics. This might be helpful for some of you indie podcasters out there 👇

Context: B2M is weekly and includes interviews between @Zach__Moreno & @RockwellFelder & podcast industry leaders.

🧵🧵
I transcribe every episode on @TrintHQ.

This is a relatively new development but we’re going to keep at it a. For accessibility of our content and b. For keyword optimization.

We post our @buzzsprout pod player and the transcript & show notes on our website on Tuesday. ✍️✍️
We create bright and clean graphics on @canva.

Most importantly, we optimize images based on where they’ll land. An image shaped for twitter won’t look great on insta or as an insta story. Canva’s got everything you need to optimize for platforms. 🎨🎭

There is no podcast discoverability problem, you're just not subscribed to enough podcast recommendation newsletters.

Creating a podcast without a network and/or huge budget is hard work. Marketing that podcast is even harder.

@zachthemack made it look easy with season 1 of his show, Greetings from Somewhere. Was it easy though? Of course not. Image
Greetings from Somewhere was featured in @vulture, @Discover_Pods, @Podnews, @outsidemagazine, @EarbudsPodCol, @washingtonpost, and so many more publications.

Zach hit up every possible PR outlet and was getting press left and right.
Now that season 1 of GFS is all launched, I wanted to chat with Zach and learn about his tactics. Zach has a lot of thoughts on creating, distributing, and marketing independent podcasts.

Are indie podcasts still viable nowadays when it seems like the whole word has a show?
