Here's a good example of bias from @NeilMacFarquhar in the NYT on the historic homicide spike: "The significant rise in homicides has roughly coincided with the 18 months of the Covid-19 pandemic."
No mention of the defund police movement, which also coincided with the surge.
He doesn't want you thinking Dems or BLM have anything to do with it.
Instead: "There is no simple explanation for the steep rise. A number of key factors are driving the violence, including the economic & social toll taken by the pandemic & a sharp increase in gun purchases."
But Neil will use *someone else* to bring up unnamed "social justice protests" as maybe having played a role.
He does, however, personally tie the spike to COVID and guns. Lost your job during COVID? Well, you apparently murdered people. Gangs? No direct mention either.
"The data also shows that the gun violence driving much of the surge is concentrated among a relatively small number of people within communities where retaliatory shootings are more common."
Does he mean gang-infested communities? Dunno. He won't say.
On policing? "The pandemic also meant that police departments sometimes struggled with the # of officers under quarantine, while the pandemic curbed public services like mental health counseling and simultaneously aggravated related problems like homelessness."
He buries the deeper convo but refuses to mention the defund movement or BLM by name. But he dismisses those concerns -- when it came to COVID being a factor, he presents zero evidence but he personally believes it so it gets the ink.
Here's the full piece. I have no clue who Neil is, but this is agenda-driven analysis, not a news story: nytimes.com/2021/09/27/us/…

The school staff "explained that red white and blue was going to be seen as racially insensitive and may affect people in a way that we will not understand and for that reason that we were to change our theme." mynorthwest.com/3141211/rantz-…
The school took this post off their Instagram. I’m told King County Sheriff’s deputies were on site checking student IDs. Don’t know why.
At the anti-Israel rally in Seattle. While chanting “Long live the Antifada,” the anti-Israel activists stole the Israeli flag from counter protesters, stopped on it, then burned it.
Here they burned the Israeli flag after the speaker at the anti-Israel Seattle rally called pro-Israel counter protesters “white supremacists.”
Lots of anti-Israel rhetoric here in Seattle already. Seattle is not friendly to Jews or Israel.
Seattle Antifa radicals try to stop traffic outside the East Precinct. A car tries to drive around it, they get in the driver's way, the driver doesn't like it, the driver goes through the radicals. I hear the person on the hood was okay.
.@Sethrogen asked me what Rashida Tlaib & Ilhan Omar have said for me (and many Jews) to label them anti-Semites. It requires a thread.
It's not just what they've said, but what they've done & believe. It's why they made Simon Wiesenthal Center list of biggest anti-Semites.
Tlaib doesn't believe in Israel's right to exist, quite literally replacing Israel with a post-it note saying "Palestine."
She supports the anti-Semitic BDS movement & when colleagues condemned it, she employed the dual loyalty trope: ‘They forgot what country they represent.’
She said that Israel "unjustly oppress[es] & target[s] Palestinian children and families. #FreePalestine" after Israel responded to 350 rockets were fired at them by terrorists.
-Immediately make SCOTUS nomination to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg to vote on in second term.
-Campaign on the issue. This will drive votes.
-Re-elect, get the conservative SCOTUS we deserve.
SCOTUS as election issue worked for Rs in '16. It motivated voters in some swing states & it should be *more* motivating now.
Hey FL, MI, WI: Do you want a PROGRESSIVE justice? It's a compelling argument from @realDonaldTrump.
Risky? Maybe. What do his internals say about race?
Is it closer than the national and state polls suggest? Then run on this issue HARD. It's already completely changed the election. It'll motivate the Left (and big money) hard. But it can also motivate the ones who were on the fence on the Right.
