I’m excited to launch @ABPI_UK's new report into the UK’s clinical research landscape (and my first as Head of Research Policy @ABPI_UK!) Here are my 6 takeaways 🧵...

1⃣ The UK has gone above and beyond when it comes to COVID-19 research with 6⃣8⃣ studies delivered in 2020 – the highest in Europe! 🔬🧪

2⃣When it comes to #GlobalBritain, only 🇺🇸 & 🇧🇷 started more C-19 trials in 2020. More broadly, the UK also punches above its weight in early phase research, maintaining its European lead in Phase I trials 🏆

3⃣ Alongside the pressures of the pandemic, patients and members of the public in the UK have played a critical role in our research efforts, with a record breaking 1.39m of us taking part in clinical research in England including over 900,000 in COVID-19 studies alone!👫👭

4⃣ We saw 66,000 participants in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, 26,000 in NI and 5,800 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 – showing that clinical research is a pan-UK strength with research happening in 100% of trusts across the country throughout 2021, as we all pulled together to fight COVID-19 🏥

5⃣ There is however a but... Our data shows the UK continues to fall behind other countries in late-stage research, ranking 7th in Phase III trials. We MUST reverse this trend and do more to attract these high-value R&D studies to the UK.

6⃣ And, for all our research success, COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on research in other conditions. At the height of the pandemic, the UK saw clinical research enrolment 🔻 84%, oncology research enrolment 🔻 88%, and NHS commercial research income 🔻 £447m.

So, what can we do? We’ve got two challenges: recover from the impact of COVID-19 and build our capacity for clinical research. Our report comes with 4 key recommendations for policy makers to roll back the impact of the past 18 months.

There’s lots to chew over, but the message is clear. The UK must build on the success of COVID-19 and position ourselves at the vanguard of global transformation post-pandemic if we are to succeed in delivering on the UK-wide vision for #clinicalresearch 🔬🧪🧬
