Latinx Resentment of Immigrants drives support for Trump and Restrictive Immigration Policies. @kassrao@lorenc2@APSALatinos
See some graphs in thread or check out our #APSA2021 panel (Latinxs in the 2020 Presidential Election @ 5est)
Theory - some Latinx blame immigrants for increasing hostility towards Latinx in US. They are redefining Latinidad to exclude immigrants. As such, Trump and restrictive policies are not a status threat - and support for Trump signals this redefinition of Latinidad to outgroups.
Lucid Sample of 1164 US Latinx and MTurK pilot of 197 US Latinx. Resentment scale includes 4 questions that measure belief in existing negative stereotypes about Latinx immigrants and that "Undocumented make Latinx look bad". Various tests demonstrate validity of this measure
23% of Latinx (Lucid sample) express high levels of immigrant resentment (>=1 on -2 to +2 resentment scale). Given that Latinx support for Trump is (at best) around 30%, our measure is capturing much of this population.
Resentment is strong predictor of Trump but not Romney (makes sense since supporting Romney would not be a visible signal of redefining Latinidad given his relatively moderate positions on immigration)
Resentment is a strong predictor of support for restrictive immigration policies
This is ongoing research and look forward to answering any questions anyone might have!
