I don’t want to share with you the details of a very tragic and horrible week in the ICU that I finished because some may not be able to relate to how out of control the situation is. 🧵 1/8
I don’t want to share with you the number of times I felt defeated as I said to grieving family that I’m sorry patient has passed and filled a death certificate and felt so angry on my drive home
Instead I will share some hard facts that tells you exactly where we are going🧵2/8
1- SK now has the highest new case rate among all provinces in Canada per 100,000.
2- In the last 14-days SK has the highest COVID death rates in Canada 🧵 3/8
3- SK has canceled over 200 surgeries per day for its citizens over the last 14 days. That is a total of 2800 surgeries in two weeks. That is 2800 families that will now have to join the wait. 🧵 4/8
4- The next few admissions to the ICU will not be in the physical ICU space, We will get creative with space and you should be aware that we are about to run out of actual specialized ICU nursing staff. 🧵 5/8
This should concern you regardless of your vaccine status because an ICU bed is needed after a bad car accident, brain bleed, any major planned serious surgery, massive heart attacks, major infections, trauma etc. 🧵 6/8
If this continues for two more weeks, the province of Saskatchewan will send its people to Ontario so their lives can be saved otherwise they will die needlessly if that is not done because we will be extremely short staffed without any possibility to staff safely. 🧵 7/8
The military, Red Cross will work to save the lives of our citizens because our government didn’t.
I am angry. I am angry. I am angry. You should be too. 🧵 8/8

I am trying to be positive reading some of the leaked changes that will be announced shortly but I am extremely disappointed in 4 flaws in our plan (1/6)
Those flaws can damage our efforts to get ahead. I love that the changes to the bubbles are effective immediately and I love all the categories that are added to the more immediate vaccination efforts.
But I still want those four flaws hone
The four flaws are: (2/6) #COVID19SK
1- Places of worship like mosques and churches shouldn’t have a maximum capacity of 30. That is simply unacceptable and extremely risky. An appropriate alternative is five or ten and certainly not 30. (3/6) #COVID19
In 1875, an eleven-room house was rented for $320 a year by a Toronto women's bible study group led by Elizabeth McMaster Opened on March 1 they set up six iron cots and "declared open a hospital 'for the admission and treatment of all sick children.'"
For over 145 years The Hospital for Sick Children treated kids ONLY. Now the hospital is taking adults into their ICU and for the first time in 145 years. In Saskatchewan, Regina has a COVID variant of concern that spread so dangerously that the situation is fully out of contro
If you think this is a Toronto or a Regina a problem then you are wrong. This third wave is underway in a massive way and if we don’t get this third wave under control then the major asymptomatic spread happening will serve as the nucleus for a horrible fourth wave in few months
3 years ago Saskatchewan was struck with the worst tragedy. A bus full of lives and dreams crashed. Lives were changed forever. I was the ICU doctor on call in what I would describe as the longest night of my career. I was a witness to the greatness of humans despite tragedy(1/8)
In an ICU room,I witnessed the greatness of Logan Boulet who registered to donate his organs shortly before the bus crash.I witnessed first hand the generosity of Bernadine and Tony Boulet and the values they raised their kids to have. I saw the tears of others and felt mine(2/8)
Despite the tragedy that took his young life that night, Logan decides to save the lives of others and to inspire millions of Canadians. Logan will always be a role model to me and an example of what greatness, selflessness, and generosity looks like(3/8)
Calling the spouse of a young COVID-19 patient to update them on their spouse’s status and hearing the sound of baby in the background is a reminder that what we are doing is not enough/not working. Young people should never be in the ICU to start with.
Young people filling up ICUs across our country, this disturbing trend is Unacceptable. We must do more to provide financial support so people can stay home if it’s the safer option instead of going to work in places that has known outbreaks because people are financial desperate
We are also in need of a pivot in our vaccine strategy to ensure that essential workers are not asked to work everyday without being protected with a vaccine. Our age based vaccine strategy is not a bad one but it should be adjusted and tweaked.
