An analysis of an outbreak of the Delta variant at nine summer youth camps in the United States shows there was NO further transmission to fully vaccinated individuals AND there was NO further transmission from breakthrough cases. Vaccination stopped the train of transmission. 🧵
This case study assessed the number of COVID-19 cases and potential secondary spread among 7,173 staff members and campers from 50 states, 13 countries, and U.S. military overseas bases at nine independently operated U.S. summer youth camps affiliated with the same organization.
Some considerations to keep in mind: some members of these groups WERE NOT eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. Three of the nine cases occurred in vaccinated staff members and six in unvaccinated campers aged 8–14 years. It is ALSO important to note that at some camps physical
distancing and masks WERE NOT utilized for the entire duration of camp. Vaccination coverage was 93% among eligible persons aged ≥12 years. All staff members (1,955) and campers (5,218) received site-specific, protocol-defined screening testing.
Testing for SARS-CoV-2, isolation, and quarantine in a population with HIGH vaccination coverage resulted in NO known secondary transmission of SARS-CoV-2 identified during camp. Most cases in these chains were unvaccinated individuals ineligible for vaccination,
but a few were fully vaccinated “breakthrough” cases HOWEVER what is important to note is there was NO further transmission from the “breakthrough cases.” So what does this mean? Vaccination STOPPED the train of transmission.
So, let’s talk about that because there is a lot of misinformation circulating recently. “Vaccinated people are just as likely to spread the coronavirus. This misunderstanding, born out of confusing statements from public-health authorities and misleading media headlines, is a
shame. It is resulting in unnecessary fear among vaccinated people, all the while undermining the public’s understanding of the importance-and effectiveness-of getting vaccinated.” So let me make one thing clear: Vaccinated people are not as likely to spread the coronavirus
as the unvaccinated. Even in the United States, where more than half of the population is fully vaccinated, the unvaccinated are responsible for the overwhelming majority of transmission. It’s worth acknowledging that even though the vaccines are our best protection-and still do
what we need them to do very well-they’re not perfect. Vaccinated individuals can experience breakthrough infections, and when they do, they can potentially infect others. Some may also develop long COVID, although thankfully the shots dramatically lower this risk too. Despite
concerns about waning immunity, vaccines provide the best protection against infection. And if someone isn’t infected, they can’t spread the coronavirus. It’s truly that simple. That’s why getting more people their shots is crucial for controlling the spread of the coronavirus:
Every vaccinated person helps limit the virus’s ability to hide, replicate, and propagate. Among the unvaccinated, the virus travels unhindered on a highway with multiple off-ramps and refueling stations. In the vaccinated, it gets lost in a maze of dead-end streets and
cul-de-sacs. Every so often, it pieces together an escape route, but in most scenarios, it finds itself cut off, and its journey ends. It can go no further. Everyone knows that the vaccines help protect each individual who gets their shots.
But when more people get vaccinated, this helps keep everyone else (including children and others ineligible for vaccination) safe too. You can read this all and more here: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… and find the case study here: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…

This has not been shared widely in the media so let’s fix that. COVID-19 is now in retreat in the United States, the United Kingdom, AND Worldwide. Worldwide, cases have fallen MORE THAN 30% since late August and weekly deaths have fallen MORE THAN 15%. It gets better. Read on.🧵
•U.S. cases and hospitalizations have fallen 35% and 25% respectively since September 1st.
•Daily deaths in the U.S. have fallen 10% since September 20th. It is the FIRST sustained decline in deaths since the early summer.
•Deaths in the U.K. have fallen 21% since their- ImageImage
September peak.
•Hospitalizations in the U.K. are down 28% since their September peak.
•The pattern has also been evident within countries, including India, Indonesia, Thailand, Britain, France, and Spain. In each of them, the Delta variant led to a surge in cases lasting-

So, not COVID-19 related, however, this is really exciting news I wanted to share. Phase I trials of Moderna's HIV vaccine candidate, mRNA-1644, which uses the same mRNA technology as our COVID-19 vaccine, is expected to begin clinical trials this month!
Approximately 38 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV with 1.2 million in the U.S. Approximately 2 million new infections of HIV are acquired worldwide every year and approximately 690,000 people die annually due to complications from HIV/AIDS.
mRNA-1644 is a novel approach to HIV vaccine strategy in humans designed to elicit broadly neutralizing HIV-1 antibodies (bNAbs). The Phase 1 study for mRNA-1644 will use iterative testing to validate the approach and antigens and multiple novel antigens will be used

A 50,000+ study out of the University of Oxford shows while “breakthrough” infections with Delta have similar viral loads (Ct) to unvaccinated individuals, vaccination DOES REDUCE transmission of Delta and vaccinated individuals are LESS LIKELY to spread the Coronavirus. 🧵
Pre-Delta, vaccination reduced transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from individuals infected despite vaccination, potentially via reducing viral loads. While vaccination still lowers the risk of infection, similar viral loads in vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals infected with Delta
question how much vaccination prevents onward transmission. Researchers here performed a retrospective observational cohort study of contacts of SARS-CoV-2-infected index cases using contact testing data from England. They used multivariable logistic regression to investigate the

Portugal, a country who once had the world’s highest number of COVID-19 cases proportionate to its population, now has the world’s HIGHEST vaccination rate. 84% of Portugal’s population is now fully vaccinated. The country will lift most pandemic restrictions on October 1st.
Note: That is 8.5 million people fully vaccinated, and this has been in a matter of months. The nation went from vaccinating only 7000 citizens a day in January, to three months later 44,000 daily doses in April, and 150,000 doses PER DAY at its vaccination peak on July 12th.
In just a few days, nightclubs and bars will be allowed to reopen to those with a digital vaccination certificate or negative COVID-19 test, after having been shut since March 2020. Digital certificates or negative tests will no longer be mandatory in hotels and gyms, but will

This is fantastic. 99.4% of Undergraduates, 97.8% of Graduates, 95.1% of Faculty, and 92.5% of Staff at Yale University are now fully vaccinated. ZERO cases among Undergraduates. Only three positive cases within the last seven days. This week, Yale has a 0.02% positivity rate.
Classes began on September 1st for Undergraduates. Aspects of life at Yale are beginning to resemble something more like their pre-pandemic form amid high rates of vaccination within the university population and the continuation of some key public health protocols.

A study out of Harvard shows while breakthrough infections with Delta have similar peak viral loads (Ct) to that of unvaccinated individuals, viral loads decrease faster in vaccinated individuals AND they are contagious for a SHORTER period of time, and harbor less virus overall.
Researchers quantified the course of viral proliferation and clearance for 173 individuals with acute SARS-CoV-2 infections using longitudinal quantitative RT-PCR tests conducted using anterior nares/oropharyngeal samples (n = 199,941) as part of the National Basketball
Association’s (NBA) occupational health program between November 28th, 2020, and August 11th, 2021. Researchers then measured the duration of viral proliferation and clearance and the peak viral concentration separately for individuals infected with Alpha (B.1.1.7), Delta
