Fell in Badgam, this day in 2017 Image
1
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Naik Chain Singh, Maha Vir Chakra (Posth), 9 Punjab
The one who chose to stay behind.
Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Nk Chain Singh was born in Village Bhain Bangar in Gurdaspur, Punjab on 19 Oct 1931.
At exactly 20yrs of age, he got enrolled into 9th Battalion The Punjab Regiment.
Just about 11 years later, he found himself in command of a section in Tsangle, NEFA.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
On 09 Oct 1962, his platoon was ordered to move from Tsangle and reinforce a vital position at Tsengjong, north of the Namka Chu river.
Later at night, one more platoon joined them to increase the strength of the position to 56 men.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The troops had limited ammunition to fight with & hardly any time to prepare their defences.
On the morning of 10th Oct 1962, more than 500 Chinese, concentrated in the north and east of this post, started shelling it with guns and mortars.
5
#ObiuaryOfTheDay
Soon came the much expected physical assault. Although outnumbered nearly 10 to 1 and with a limited quantity of ammunition, own troops held their own and beat back the attack with heavy casualties to the Chinese.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, the determined & logistically/numerically superior enemy soon launched a second, even stronger attack.
Once again, the Punjabis refused to give in, or for that matter, die. Instead, they held their own, littering the battlefield with Chinese corpses.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
But the poor logistics soon forced their hand and realizing the rapidly exhausting state of ammo, the company commander ordered own troops to pull back.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, the troops were still in contact with the enemy, & couldn't just get up & move back.
It was at this stage that Nk Chain Singh took charge of his section's LMG & let loose a hail of bullets on the enemy, giving cover to own troops for their withdrawal.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
With most of enemy fire now directed at this lone warrior, the inevitable soon happened - he got hit by enemy machine gun fire.
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Grievously wounded, he still kept up an effective fusillade of fire on the Chinese, giving all the cover that he could give as his comrades made their way to safety.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However he could not continue long as another final, fatal burst from the enemy gun hit him in the head killing him instantaneously.
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This brave son of Mother India had sacrificed himself for the sake of his fellow brothers in arms, in a part of his Nation that couldn't possibly have been much farther from his birthplace.
13/13

Worthy successors to their warrior forefathers, they scripted a saga of bravery that night. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Leaked intel meant the LTTE knew of the plan and after the first wave landed, none else were able to do so.
As a result, instead of the 360 men planned to be dropped, only 30 could do so.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Undaunted, these Khalsas of Gobind moved on to link up with men of 10 Para Battalion as was originally planned, though with 12 times lesser numbers.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was a fierce fight, with no side asking for any quarters, and none giving any. So much so that the last three men alive put in an audacious bayonet charge instead of surrendering.
Two of them died and one badly wounded was taken prisoner.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Bodies of the fallen Khalsa warriors lay sprawled on a roadside for next few days where they were dumped by the enemy, and burnt thereafter using a can of petrol.
Sepoy Gora Singh was the sole survivor and told of their saga of valour after his release. Image
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
They had fallen in the battlefield in true warrior traditions, choosing death over the ignominy of surrender. They went to their deaths, heroically and steadfastly, without any fuss, playing the cards dealt to them by fate, to the best of their abilities.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
In the process, they earned for their Paltan, four Vir Chakras and Six Sena Medals, plus an everlasting name in the glorious military history of the Nation.

Unmindful of his injuries, he continued leading his section and personally destroyed a bunker housing a machine gun that had stalled their advance.
3

2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Sep Prabhakar Patre, 8 Mahar, Vir Chakra (Posth).
Also fell with his Company Commander, Capt Sunil Chander Image
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Today marks 33 years since these two from Eighth Battalion The Mahar Regiment laid down their lives in a remote battlefield in a now forgotten war.
Here is their story ..
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
One of the companies of their battalion was surrounded by the LTTE & under repeated attacks for some time, running low on ammo.
Capt Sunil and Sepoy Prabhakar were part of the party that was tasked to resupply ammo to the besieged troops.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The task in itself may sound simple, but it was far from that.
Just imagine, a company of an Indian Army battalion inside a war zone, actually besieged & running out of ammo.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Just imagine the kind of enemy that must have engaged it, and the sheer numbers that might be in the vicinity, for the simple task of PREVENTING any resupplies or reinforcements to the surrounded company.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
And this was exactly the task that Capt Sunil and his men were ordered to do.
They too knew the odds.
They knew the enemy would be waiting for them.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
But comrades were in danger.
This was a job from which not everyone would come back alive.
They knew this too.
They also knew that earlier attempts at resupply using helicopters had failed due to enemy fire.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was this same enemy through which they would have to physically fight their way, loaded with supplies that would slow them down.
Yet they bashed on.
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
And it turned out to be exactly how they had expected it to be - Bloody.
The enemy was determined not to let them reach their comrades, just as they were determined to do so.
In the end, the good guys prevailed.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Capt Sunil and his team broke through the tight LTTE cordon and reached their besieged comrades with the much needed ammo, literally saving their lives.
But in doing so, Capt Sunil and Sepoy Prabhakar were grievously wounded.
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Yet they hung on & chose to breathe their last only AFTER the job had been successfully accomplished.
They ensured that they broke thru to the besieged company with life saving supplies, and ONLY THEN did they succumb to the injuries sustained in the process.
13
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It must have been one hell of a fight. And these two & their comrades must have been some badass fighters.
In the end these two men & their comrades CHOSE to go to certain deaths, steadfastly and heroically, without any fuss, for the sake of their comrades.
14
#ObituaryOfTheDay
A grateful Nation acknowledged their selfless sacrifice & bestowed a Vir Chakra upon each of these martyrs.

3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
His moment of glory came when a search party led by him through a dense forest suddenly came under heavy fire by militants waiting in ambush.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was sheer bad luck for the militants that day, however.
They had unluckily, engaged a patrol of Rajput warriors led by a fearless Jat!
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Unsurprisingly, without sparing even a single moment to think about his personal safety, Lt Atri charged ferociously TOWARDS the militants who were still bringing down heavy fire on his 'boys', some of whom would've easily been a decade & a half older to him.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
By doing this, Lt Atri ensured that all fire was directed towards him and his men got a chance to seek cover.
His charge resulted in total disarray in the militants' ranks & the killing of two of them.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, Lt Atri too was seriously injured in the process.
Yet, determined to protect his men from harm, Atri kept the militants engaged, soon accounting for yet another militant before breathing his last.
All this happened literally in the blink of an eye.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Soon, his enraged Rajputs rallied & took out the remaining five terrorists too.
No prisoners were taken alive in that forest that day.
Not when their young leader lay dead.
No terrorist saw the next dawn.
9

However, the gallant young Lt Dheerendra Singh Atri lay martyred, having lived up to, and died by the Chetwode motto all army officers swear by. Image

#ObituaryOfTheDay
Guardsman Rajaseb Babu Maniyar, Vir Chakra (Posthumous), 6 Guards was all of 26 years old when he achieved immortality this day 34 yrs ago in a faraway battlefield in Sri Lanka.
Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Maniyar was a light machine gunner with with the rear platoon of 'B' Company of 6 Guards who'd been ordered to join their Brigade HQ location at Kepai by capturing all enemy positions enroute.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
To do so, the company had to move through a militant infested area along a heavily mined road.
They HAD to move along the road due to the vehicles that had to move with them.
The Company had progressed hardly 200 yards when they came under heavy fire.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The forward elements were pinned down & unable to retaliate effectively.
At this point the company commander ordered the rear platoon to attack the enemy from a flank.
The platoon commander, in turn, ordered Maniyar to deploy his LMG & cover the platoon's move
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
While executing this order, young Maniyar himself came under very heavy fire that prevented him from carrying out his task. He decided to move to an alternate position.
But in doing so, he was hit by a bullet in his abdomen.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Regardless, he brought his LMG into action from the new position & continued to cover his platoon's move.
Soon he noticed that the enemy had opened up another position near him within grenade range.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He did the needful and silenced the position by lobbing a grenade.
But by now, he had lost a large amount of blood and soon succumbed.
8/8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
His gallant actions saved not only the lives of his platoon mates but also enabled them to relieve the pressure on the forward platoon that was pinned down.

#ObituaryOfTheDay
Subedar Joginder Singh, Param Vir Chakra (Posthumous) & the Khalsas of his platoon who refused to retreat in front of immense Chinese hordes this day in 1962. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Joginder Singh was commanding a platoon of 20 soldiers to form the guards of IB Ridge & Twin Peaks near the BumLa Pass that formed one of the major routes of ingress for the PLA in 1962.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The Chinese, who were eyeing the capture of Tawang, knew they couldn't do so without capturing the Twin Peaks because Indian soldiers deployed here could see every movement of the Chinese from miles away.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It was therefore certain that the Chinese would put all their effort to capture IB Ridge & Twin Peaks.
And the expected attack commenced at 0530Hr on 23 Oct when the PLA opened a very heavy attack on the Bumla axis with intention of breaking through to Tawang.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The leading battalion of the enemy attacked the ridge in three waves, each about 200 strong. There were only Subedar Joginder's platoon of 20 men defending the features, mind you.
But these Khalsas of Gobind were in no mood to retreat that morning.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
They hung on with a stubbornness that Khalsas are well known for.
Subedar Joginder Singh had deployed his platoon well and his men mowed down the first wave with ruthless efficiency.
The enemy was temporarily halted by the heavy losses.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Within a few minutes, a second wave came over and was dealt with similarly,
However, by now the defenders were running low on ammo.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Subedar Joginder asked his company HQ for more ammo, but the same wasn't possible due to Chinese pressure. The company commander, Lt Haripal Kaushik advised Sub Joginder to withdraw back to the company HQ.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, Subedar Joginder refused to abandon his position and assured that the enemy would not be allowed to get through till the time they lived.
Soon he was wounded in his thigh, yet he stayed put, still leading his men.
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
With such an audacious leader, the Khalsas held on stubbornly, refusing to oblige the Chinese despite all that they threw on that piece of ground. Soon came the third attack. Sub Joginder himself manned an LMG and mowed down more attackers.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Talking about that 'piece of ground', here is what it looked like. This is the exact spot where these successors of Saragarhi Warriors put up their last stand.
I'm sure Hav Ishar Singh and his men would have been proud of them.
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, ammo was on the verge of running out and the Chinese kept coming.
When the attackers finally closed in one last time, Sub Joginder and his remaining men fixed bayonets on their ancient rifles and came out of their trenches to meet the enemy head on.
13
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Not one of them even thought about showing his back to the enemy, or surrendering.
The hills of Budhhist populated NEFA echoed with their war cry 'Jo Boley So Nihal' and the ferocious warriors of First Battalion The Sikh Regiment fell upon the Chinese hordes.
14
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Many more Chinese fell to their bayonets before the sheer difference in numbers decided the outcome.
A mortally wounded Sub Joginder Singh was taken prisoner and he died some days later due to his injuries and frostbite while in Chinese custody.

This day in 1962, he was commanding a company of 2 Sikh LI at a bridge on the Sela-Jang Road, short of Tawang.

In order to gather more info, he took out a patrol to find out the condition of the bridge across river Tawang Chu and whether the enemy was making any attempts to reconstruct it.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The patrol came under mortar fire. Realising the danger to his men, he deployed the patrol & moved forward alone towards the bridge.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
As he approached within 500 yards of the bridge, the enemy opened a heavy volume of machine gun & small arms fire from the far bank of the river. Undaunted, Captain Rosario crawled forward to about 150 yards & collected vital information.
5

This day in 1947, at 8am, Maj Somnath Sharma, 4 Kumaon & Capt Ronnie Wood, 1 Kumaon reported to HQ 161 Brigade to discuss the day's patrol pgme.
Maj Somnath was a veteran of bitter battles in Arakan in WW2.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
His right arm was still in plaster due to a hockey injury suffered when playing with his troops some days ago.
This is probably one of his last photos alive, taken at the Srinagar Airfield. Image
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Ignoring medical advice, he had bulldozed his way into joining his own Company as it flew into the Valley on 01 Nov 1947 Image
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This day, two Companies of 4 Kumaon moved out on a patrol towards Badgam, followed shortly by another company of 1 Kumaon.
The Company of 1 Kumaon subsequently moved on towards Magam and thereafter returned to the airfield at about 1 pm.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
That done, Maj Somnath was also ordered to start thinning out. At 2pm, one company of 4 Kumaon moved back.
Maj Somnath reported that all was quiet with villagers going about their daily business.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Little did he know that there was a huge force of raiders was gathering in the vicinity, trying to skirt the Pattan route blocked by 1 Sikh.
Had the second Company too moved back at 2pm, this route to airfield would have been unguarded.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Too bad for the enemy, it wasn't so.
At about 2.30pm,Maj Somnath reported that he was under ineffective, long range fire from ppl located in houses in Badgam but he wasn't returning the fire for the fear of hurting innocent villagers.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Suddenly, a large force appeared in front.
A full scale frontal attack was now underway on his location, with the Kumaonis hugely outnumbered by the enemy.
10
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The firing from the houses in Badgam was just a distraction as the main force of raiders built up on a different flank.
Yet the tenacious Kumaonis, under their gutsy leader, dug in and refused to cede any ground to their uninvited 'guests'.
11
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The enemy had made a militarily brilliant plan which was doomed to failure due to one small fact - the Kumaonis under Maj Somnath Sharma simply refused to play by their rules!
12
#ObituaryOfTheDay
An epic battle followed, upon which would hinge the fate of the entire campaign - If the raiders captured the airfield, all would be lost and the troops ahead would be outflanked.
Upon the Kumaonis rested the fate of the Valley this day.
13
#ObituaryOfTheDay
And they rose to the occasion, ensuring that the airfield would not fall .. not this day .. not on their watch in any case.
Maj Somnath reported that he was engaging the enemy with all he had, but he was outnumbered & enemy was gaining ground.
14
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Even as automatics and mortars rained deadly fire on them & covered the advancing enemy, Maj Somnath Sharma rallied his boys and they fought back like men possessed, inflicting serious casualties on the raiders, losing their own too, in the process.
15
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Soon HQ 161 Brigade would receive his last transmission from battlefield, that would define the last stand of Maj Somnath Sharma.
Words that echo in the Valley to this day ..
16
#ObituaryOfTheDay
"The enemy are only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to the last man & last round"
Immortal last words by the Paramveer who went down shortly thereafter.
17
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This man didn't have to be there.
In fact he had been ORDERED to stay in Delhi due to his injury.
Yet he chose to go on with his boys and made a place for himself in Indian military history.
But his story doesn't finish with his martyrdom. It carries on .. Image
18
#ObituaryOfTheDay
By the time the epic Battle of Badgam was over, less than 100 Kumaonis had held back nearly 700 raiders & saved the Srinagar Airfield.
19
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The Kumaonis lost 15 killed, including Maj Somnath Sharma and 26 wounded. One ammo truck too was looted by enemy but they failed their objective, losing many more than they killed.
This was the closest they would get to the Airfield.
EVER.
20
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Hereafter, the raiders would 'advance' in only one direction - BACK to where they came from, i.e Westwards.
21
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, the danger to the airfield was still not over.
In evening, 1 Punjab moved double quick to take up more blocking positions to secure the airfield.
Now at night, they waited.
22
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The airfield was still vulnerable. Another determined attack by the enemy, and it could still fall .. especially at night.
Yet the enemy failed to make good this opportunity of a lifetime.
23
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Reason?
Khurshid, the leader of that party was injured in the leg by a bullet. Leaderless, the Pathans dithered on further course of action.
24
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Ironically, Maj Somnath Sharma had saved the airfield not only in the afternoon through his supreme sacrifice, but at night too by leaving the raiders leaderless.
25
#ObituaryOfTheDay
So much so, that on return to Karachi, Khurshid - the leader of the raiders in that battle - stated that he'd run into an entire Indian Brigade and ROUTED it, when it was just one company of less than 100 troops that he'd encountered!
26
#ObituaryOfTheDay
A few months later, Khurshid died, possibly of the same wounds that he had suffered at the hands of Maj Somnath's boys in Badgam.
Atleast now he could reconcile the Indians' strength with his Maker!
27
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Maj Somnath's body was recovered after three days, once the situation had stabilized.
Disfigured beyond recognition, it was identified by the few pages of the Bhagwad Gita that he always kept in his pocket and his empty pistol holster.
28
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Major Somnath Sharma had lived, and died by the code of the warrior.
And claimed for himself the first Param Vir Chakra awarded by the Nation.

#ObituaryOfTheDay
He was part of a team of his battalion that was tasked to clear a road from Trincomalee to Nilaveli.
Most of the approach roads were heavily mined and booby trapped and had to be cleared first.
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
As Bachittar and his comrades went about the dangerous task, they soon came under a well planned and executed ambush, when the LTTE militants opened up on them from many different directions.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
It seemed a flawless plan at first glance, but the enemy had miscalculated.
To be fair, Op Pawan was still in its early stages and the LTTE hadn't had much time to understand who it was that they were fighting against.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Men like Sepoy Bachittar and many more like him would tell the LTTE what kind of men they were against.
Bachittar, hit and wounded by a burst of Light Machine Gun fire in the very first stages of the ambush did the unthinkable.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Unmindful of his injuries, he CHARGED into the enemy that was still firing indiscriminately at him and his brothers.
He returned fire with fire, sending the enemy into disarray, hitting a few.
And then, when he closed in, he bayoneted another one to death.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
This blood soaked Khalsa of Gobind proved quite a handful for the enemy and drew all fire upon himself, thereby ensuring the safety of his comrades.
He kept fighting till a grenade finally brought him down.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Young Bachittar Singh lay dead thousands of miles from home, but in the process he had made sure that the enemy's plan was foiled.
His brothers more than avenged him by killing, amongst others, leader of the LTTE ambush party that had dared to challenge them.

Captain Gurjinder Singh Suri was the Ghatak platoon commander of 12 Bihar and was located somewhere near Kargil. Image
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
On 09 Nov 1999, the enemy launched an attack on own post, which was successfully repulsed, and true to their form, the Paakis fled back once they realized that they were outclassed as usual.
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Seizing the opportunity, the Ghatak platoon was ordered to pursue the fleeing enemy.
Capt Suri immediately deployed his support group to take care of any reinforcement or interference and set out to clear the offending enemy one bunkers at a time.
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
When he saw that one comrade was grievously injured by an enemy machine gun in the process, he quickly moved on with his buddy to clear the bunker.
He killed two enemy soldiers with his AK rifle & silenced the offending machine gun.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However in the process he received a burst in his left arm. Unmindful of his injury, Capt Suri continued to lead his men to accomplish the task.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
He then lobbed two hand grenades into another bunker and entered inside, spraying bullets with his AK rifle, killing yet another enemy soldier instantly.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
At this point he was hit by an enemy RPG & was critically wounded.
Yet, he refused to be evacuated and continued to exhort his men till he breathed his last.
9

Nawang lies in peace, having chosen a career he desired & dying trying to save a comrade's life.
He'd been in commissioned service for just 2 months.
Fell five weeks short of his 25th birthday.
Here's his story .. Image
2
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Born to renowned mountaineers, Hareesh and Geeta Kapadia, Nawang was named after a Sherpa.
He naturally inherited an adventurous streak.
This landed this Mumbai lad into the OTA soon after graduation. ImageImage
3
#ObituaryOfTheDay
In Sep 2000, Lt Nawang Kapadia got commissioned into Fourth Battalion The Third Gorkha Rifles, or 4/3 GR, at 24 years of age.
After a short leave, he joined his battalion in Kupwara on 29th Oct 2000. Image
4
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The battalion at that point in time was committed in relentless counter insurgency operations.
Nawang soon became part of the 4/3 GR family and got involved into such operations as well. Image
5
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Who could have known that this young 'Kancha' of the battalion had but 13 days left in this particular journey of his in the mortal realm.
On 10 Nov, info was received about the presence of a large group of terrorists in the infamous Rajwar forest of Kupwara.
6
#ObituaryOfTheDay
The battalion quickly launched an operation in which Nawang was tasked to lead his platoon as well.
Soon, a well hidden hideout was discovered by the Gorkhas of 4/3 GR. The terrorists, realizing that their game was up, opened up incessant fire.
7
#ObituaryOfTheDay
Nawang's platoon bore the brunt of this fire and Havaldar Chitra Bahadur received a burst and fell down.
Instinctively, Nawang rushed to the aid of Chitra Bahadur, firing at the terrorists while at it, rest of his troops too providing covering fire.
8
#ObituaryOfTheDay
However, hidden from all, yet another terrorist opened fire at Lt Nawang from close quarter, injuring him seriously.
Nawang soon breathed his last, but his supreme sacrifice didn't go in vain as own troops soon dispatched the rest of the terrorists.
9
#ObituaryOfTheDay
There was, however, no joy after completion of a successful operation since Nawang and Chitra lay martyred.
Here is a panoramic sketch I discovered on the www, describing how the events of that day unfolded. Image

Lala Lajpat Rai - 93rd death anniversary today.
He fell, but the light that he lit, ultimately burnt down the British Empire.
Shame that hardly anyone of us remembers such folks anymore.

Does at once perform the duties of four ashrams

The austere ascetic

The soldier who is killed in battle with his face to the foe

Here's wishing Happy #WalongDay to the heroes of 6 KUMAON.
They went to their deaths heroically & steadfastly, without any fuss this day in 1962.
Just so that a General could please a PM on his birthday.
This day in 1962 - The only attack of the war by Indian army was launched - As a birthday gift from a general to a PM.
A heavy price was paid by the Kumaonis of 6 Kumaon that night.
#WalongDay
Denied even one day to prepare for the attack, they went in as ordered.
Out of the over 200 men that had gone into the attack, only 90 returned.

This attack in Manipur, ever since the news broke, has been playing on my mind. I'm sure I won't be the only one who has been taken aback by what transpired earlier today.
2
I think the reason is not that soldiers were killed in this attack, but instead that the wife and child of the Commanding Officer too were killed.
Now this is not to say that the loss of the five soldiers is any less than that of the lady and the kid. Far from it, in fact.
3
Each and every soldier lost is one too many. However, it is also a fact that they willingly put their lives on the line as part of their service to the Motherland.
Yet, fact remains that none of their family members have been targetted in the insurgency in the North-East before

Today is 48th anniversary of what must be one of the most audacious attacks that saw Egyptians cross the Suez and return to Sinai!

Sharing some thoughts on current West Asian situation on the 48th anniversary of the #YomKippurWar.
Israel fought ALL its neighbours (less Lebanon, but that is too insignificant a player). Here goes:

(a) Egypt was at the forefront, leading the entire Arab world. Israel made ..
3
.. its peace with Egypt by withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula following the Camp David Accord. Anwar al Sadat had to pay for it with his life. Egypt lately has been on the brink, barely holding out against centrifugal forces.
(b) Libya: Gaddafi sent armour & ..
