. @StateDeptSpox The TPLF has just launched a new offensive against Afar on the day before the swearing in of the Ethiopian Govt.

And HoA Feltman is on a hand holding mission to Sudan. Another one.

The US needs to pay attention.
Surely a new offensive against the Legitimate govt of Ethiopia by the TPLF on the day of inauguration is sufficient to end US Government and UN support for them.
On Friday September 17th the US President announced a new set of unilateral sanctions specially designed for peace making. Demanding that “all parties” to the conflict in Tigray enter negotiations without preconditions.
Ethiopia’s PM responded with an open letter dismissing the attempted coercion. The following week the UNGA was held. The President delivered a speech in which he mentioned Ethiopia, briefly. Ethiopia responded proudly on Saturday.
Throughout this period the TPLF continued its terrorising and murderous activities in Northern Ethiopia against civilians and livestock. It did not withdraw. It did not request negotiations. Also during this period the UN revealed at that TPLF has 100s of UN aid trucks.
Rather than acknowledging that it had lost hundreds of trucks, 100s of tonnes of food and 1000s of litres th d fuel the @UNReliefChief and @WFPChief gave interviews to agencies and called for the lost trucks to get moving again. This was still a humanitarian crisis to the UN.
The @AP interview didn’t even mention the trucks.
And the looting and violence and hostage taking by the TPLF continued against the lawful sovereign government of Ethiopia. And then Ethiopia expelled seven high ranking officials. With cause.
One of them, the UNDP’s UN top brass leadership liaison officer - who used to work with one of the TPLF’s senior generals - had used his Twitter account to cheer on TPLF victories and spread lies about who started the war, and leaked audio of meetings for propaganda purposes.
The UN responded to the expulsions with a statement alleging Ethiopia had no legal right to expel its staff. And it appears they may in fact not have left. The law however is clear. And it seems odd UNs leadership did not know this as it happens quite a lot.
At this point all the usual subjects once again threatened Ethiopia, for its temerity in standing up, several indignant western nations demanded a UNSC consultation this last Friday which appears to have achieved nothing. Probably because the law is clear.
And what did the TPLF do during all of this. They released a two hour long video in which they said the war would continue. Several days ago. Did the US or UN condemn this? Of course not, was it reported in the media? Of course not.
And what else happened? In the period since the US embarked on its peace coercion program against Ethiopia? Another rebel army, the OLA, who formed an alliance with TPLF in August showed its colours and released video of its rebel battalions. And continued its own killing spree.
Did this receive any western media coverage. Of course not? And Ethiopia continued its preparations to swear in its first democratically elected Govt. An election that was never acknowledged by the US Govt. and used as cover for the TPLF’s June offensive.
The US talks a lot about its desire for democracy in Africa, just not in Ethiopia. The US “newspaper of record” labeled Ethiopia’s unilateral ceasefire a surrender. But that was the offensive before the last one. The last one began in July. During the unilateral ceasefire.
That one was never condemned by the US or UN, and it seemed to be nearly over but today on the night before the swearing in of the Govt. tonight the TPLF have started a new one against the Afar. And all the while the US continues to hold a threat of a sanctions over Ethiopia.
And the US “newspaper of record” continues to quote the nonsensical excuses of the TPLF for the missing UN trucks being used in the TPLF war effort, namely intimidated drivers who don’t want to go back.
This is a complete disgrace. From woe to go.

Tomorrow no doubt Ethiopia will swear in its Govt. while the TPLF continues its muderous war of succession absent any criticism for doing so from the global leaders in the USG and UN.
Representatives of much of the rest of the world, the less rich parts will be present. And Ethiopia will rise. No thanks to the so called guardians of world peace, and seemingly in spite of their concerted efforts to try to prevent it.

Two parts of the @UN_Spokesperson's readout are problematic, and help point in the direction of explaining the expulsions.

"The spread of conflict into the Amhara and Afar regions"

"fighting along the Tigray regional boundary has led to 100s of 1000s of people being displaced." ImageImage
They both relate to a phenomena that needs a better name.

It is often called "false equivalence" but, IMO that's not strong enoug. @Qnie_Addis has done a thread on "gaslighting" which is what it is, but as a term is not IMO specific enough.
@Qnie_Addis "The spread of conflict into the Amhara and Afar regions"

The conflict did not "spread". TPLF forces invaded.

This lack of precision makes it sounds as if Ethiopia contributed to this, when in fact at the time that it "spread" Ethiopia was under a unilateral ceasefire.

This is the readout, which begins the briefing.

After weeks of few or none Qs on Ethiopia, now there are lots. ImageImage
The daily briefings are held at 12pm ET (US) time, early evening EAT. You can watch them live here >> media.un.org/en/webtv/sched…

And yesterday's one (the most recent) can be watched here >> media.un.org/en/asset/k1c/k…
Here is the Q&A related to Ethiopia. Questions were focussed on the expulsions and the reasons for compliance with Ethiopia's persona-non-grata instructions, which the UN insists it does not recognise & says it is a long-standing position of the UN. Image

Today the World Meteorological Agency @WMO held a press conference in the lead up to the COP26 summit, which addressed water, and the importance of measures to address adaptation measures. media.un.org/en/asset/k17/k…
@WMO A new report has been issued which contains some very interesting slides on changes in climate so far (last 20 years) plus what is expected to happen. Image
In the above slide you can see now very clearly that Sub-Saharan Africa (particularly the Sahel & East Africa) and the Middle East are expected to get substantially wetter as the climate warms, while South America is expected to get drier.

The forecast path of Extratropical Cyclone Sam is unusual to say the least. The storm is expected to reach as far north as Iceland. And will continue to impact European Weather significantly for several more days. Image
Here is a 120 hour forecast for the north Atlantic where you can see how the storm continues northwards.
Here's another view of the same model, @NOAA's GFS which places it in larger context.
