This week’s #OPCW Executive Council takes place just over a year since the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey @Navalny. The UK and partners will continue to press Russia for answers. A short thread on why this is an issue in the @OPCW ⬇️🧵 #EC98
#Navalny fell seriously ill on 20 August 2020 on a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. After an emergency landing, he received life-saving treatment in Omsk. Then on 22 August, he travelled to Berlin for further treatment.
At the request of Germany, OPCW experts took samples from Mr Navalny on 6 September. These samples went for analysis in two independent OPCW-designated labs. Both found evidence of exposure to a nerve agent from the novichok group.
Russia has never explained the poisoning or what it is doing to investigate. It has stalled on a request for technical assistance from the OPCW.
🇬🇧 and partners have said: the only credible explanation is Russian state involvement and responsibility for the use of a banned chemical weapon, as in Salisbury in 2018.
The mission of the OPCW is to rid the world of chemical weapons. By continuing to use CWs, Russia undermines that vision and breaks international law. We will continue to hold Russia to account in the OPCW and elsewhere. Read the OPCW summary here: opcw.org/sites/default/…
