Helloooooo Twitter!!! I have.... some personal news. Big news....
I've started a new publication, on Substack. I've been quiet as a mouse prepping some work I'm really really proud of. It'll be tri-weekly (is that a word?), I get to work with amazing editor @DavidSwansonNYC, and it's called The Sword and the Sandwich. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/this-day-we-…
The plan: I'll be writing about the far right (and the anti-vaxx movement, and white nationalism). And sandwiches. Seriously, I'm going to go through Wikipedia's List of Notable Sandwiches in alphabetical order and write about it. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/about
Upcoming posts include notes on the covid vaccine as the Mark of the Beast; memoirs of an occasional witcher; a meditation on the submarine sandwich; and LOTS MORE. Please come join me in this fresh-pressed panini of a venture, it's hot and ready for you. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com
Also, as I put it in my first post, I'm aware Substack has more than its fair share of transphobes and reactionaries. But... you're reading this on Twitter. And I don't believe in ceding ground to the cruelest. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/this-day-we-…
also i have been so damn nervous about this and announcing it so thanks for bearing with me. I know the first post is a bit bare and nerdy. But trust me. There's much more to come. Join me!!!! theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/this-day-we-…
Just crossed a thousand people on the email list, pretty exciting :)

For a year or more, I've been fascinated by that subset of American Christians who consider the covid vaccine the fabled Biblical "mark of the beast." On Substack, I just published a deep dive into the theology - and century of history - behind that idea: theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/apocalypse-n…
I worked really hard on this piece (and read A LOT, dove into right-wing forums, watched anti-vaxx Christian TikToks, learned about "Persecution Games" played at church camps, and learned the life story of John the Revelator). I hope you'll give it a look! theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/apocalypse-n…
Among the subjects of "Mark of the Beast" panics over the last century:
-Social Security Numbers
-The New Deal
-Bar codes
-Credit cards
-Microchips
-And ... the covid-19 vaccine - the deadly apotheosis of an era of fear. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/apocalypse-n…
i find the gridlock/horseshit in congress more depressing than researching nazis and far right extremists and even the antivaxx movement. its just numbing, deadening, crushing, heartbreaking.
it just seems very horrible and stupid and fake and insidious and dull which is the worst. fuck these people! none of them care about helping people and so many people are so desperate for help!
like........ this shit is why nobody likes congress! it's a feckless deviant-elite gerontocracy full of sociopaths. people are dying and deprived and what are we served? this utter pablum, some weird lady macbeth psychological shit, i do not care, just help people
people say new yorkers are unfriendly but twice in the past week- including tonight - there have been accidents on my street and groups of neighbors have immediately assembled to make sure the person is safe and okay and has their belongings & medical care no fuss no muss
i was going out for a smoke and feeling lonely and 3 seconds later me and 2 other strangers were lifting a revel scooter off a guy who flipped over, getting him an uber to the hospital & securing his stuff. no drama just gentle firm action these other ladies were incredible
honestly being an agoraphobe perching on a corner doesnt necessarily preclude you from seeing or partaking in dramatic rescues in nyc, it turns out
1. i did not want to run because i feel like a sadsack full of sadshit. i ran anyway. like i had glue on my feet, but i ran. 2. i weigh "strangers gently cheer me on when they see me running" million pounds. its very embarrassing. 3. still, 3.5 miles.
you really dont need to cheer when you see a fat person running. you really dont
to all the people defending this practice, for some reason, 1) the devil doesnt need more advocates 2) you can also leave me alone
