The death toll from smoking is staggering (including my own father). 8 million people die every year from smoking
who.int/news-room/fact…
...including 480,000 in the USA
cdc.gov/tobacco/data_s…
2
Harm reduction can reduce that death toll, according to 15 past-Presidents of the world's leading professional society in tobacco control.
ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/pdf/10.210…

...and over 70 respected scientific and public health organizations around the world.
drive.google.com/file/d/1Ty7pgR…

Quit smoking options include nicotine patches, gum & lozenges; prescription meds; and #SaferNicotine alternatives such as nicotine vapes, #snus, nicotine pouches & HnB.

Smokers who switch to e-cigarettes reduce their risk of cancer, heart & lung disease
docs.google.com/document/d/1LX…
4
Quitting smoking is hard for many. The average smoker who succeeds does so only after an average of 30 failed quit attempts.
bmjopen.bmj.com/content/6/6/e0…

E-cigarettes are far more effective for smoking cessation than nicotine patches & gum.
cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.10…
5
Many smokers who try e-cigarettes "quit by accident." They tried an ecig with no intention of quitting.

No one ever quit by accident with a nicotine patch or gum. These products are only used by smokers who WANT to quit.
6
So... How many adults have quit smoking with e-cigarettes? Simple question. Strange that the public doesn't know the answer.

UK: 2.3 million
ash.org.uk/wp-content/upl…

USA: 4.3 million (at least)
cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…

EU: 7.5 million
ec.europa.eu/commfrontoffic…
7
4.3 million US adult vapers are ex-smokers. But this is NOT the total number who quit smoking with e-cigarettes. It doesn't include people who quit smoking with e-cigarettes, and later quit vaping.

If similar to UK, the real number may be >5.4 million
ons.gov.uk/file?uri=%2Fpe…
8
In the USA, by far, most regular nicotine vapers are adults, not teens (ex-smokers, or on the journey to quit).

80% of America's 11 million adult vapers prefer fruit, dessert or candy flavor / don’t want cigarette flavor
dropbox.com/s/b8uwoxay6i2f…
9
'Flavors' are FAR more effective for smoking cessation than cigarette flavor (tobacco flavor). #Duh
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
academic.oup.com/ntr/advance-ar…
academic.oup.com/ntr/article/22…
10
Worth noting that nicotine gum and nicotine lozenges are both literally CANDY. They are available in fruit, cinnamon, mint and menthol flavors. No smoker who is trying to quit would ever buy tobacco flavor. So big pharma companies don't make that.
#Duh
11
The UK government health services promotes nicotine vaping for adult smokers, and teen vaping remains extremely low there.
gov.uk/government/pub…
12
In the USA, teen nicotine vaping is obviously undesirable, but not a “crisis.”

US high school nicotine vaping plummeted 29% (2019-2020)
cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…
...and then another 42% (2020-2021)
cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/7…

It's lower now than in 2014.
13
Today, according to the latest @CDCgov survey, only 3% of US teens vape nicotine daily, and most of them smoked first. There is no "whole new generation hooked." That claim is a propaganda tactic, not truth.
academic.oup.com/ntr/article-ab…
14
In fact, US high school smoking has dropped 3X faster than historical trends over the past 8 years. Young adult smoking has plummeted as well. Both are now lowest in history.

The smoking & vaping rates in this graph are from the same @CDCgov survey that's in the news now.
15
Still, politicians are gripped by a false belief that teen vaping is a crisis (misinfo funded by @MikeBloomberg & @truthinitiative). Their proposed policy “cures” are all far worse than the “disease.”

e.g., Higher ecig taxes increase cigarette sales.
nber.org/system/files/w…
16
Higher e-cigarette taxes also “increase prenatal smoking.” And that's bad. Very very bad.

This should be Econ 101 folks. These are “product substitutes.”
nber.org/papers/w26126
17
The next policy "cure" now pushed despite a 60% drop in teen vaping is 'flavor' bans.

If vape ‘flavors’ are banned, 1 in 3 young adult vapers (33% of those aged 18-34) will switch to smoking.
academic.oup.com/ntr/advance-ar…

This seems unwise.
18
And we have solid data covering what happened after San Francisco banned 'flavors' in 2018. School SMOKING increased dramatically there, but not in surrounding school districts.
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
jamanetwork.com/journals/jamap…
19
‘Flavor’ bans also increased cigarette sales in Washington, Rhode Island, New York, & Nova Scotia. This would be mostly adults, not teens.

Making ecigs less acceptable strengthens cigarette sales. #Duh
juullabsscience.com/wp-content/upl…
cstoredecisions.com/2021/01/14/tob…
vapingdaily.com/news/in-canada…
20
Online sales and mail shipment bans reduce adult access (especially for adult smokers and ex-smokers who live in rural areas.

Hardly any teens (0.2%) get vape products online. So this "policy cure" just harms adults, with no effect on teens.
sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
21
So, who is driving all this? Two huge foundations: @BloombergDotOrg & @truthinitiative. Both try to hide the FACT that teen vaping has plummeted 60%.

Both claim:
1) vaping is a gateway to stinky tobacco smoking and
2) if all vapes are tobacco flavor, fewer teens will vape
22
Both US foundations utterly ignore the impact of their "policy cures" on 11 million adult nicotine vapers and 34 million adult smokers.

@BloombergDotOrg spreads its misinformation worldwide through @TobaccoFreeKids, @TheUnion_TBLH & dozens of astro-turf NGOs.
@MikeBloomberg
23
So... How do we get back to sanity? One person at a time. That's how drug #HarmReduction made progress.

68 million adults worldwide use #SaferNicotine to avoid toxic forms of tobacco. We have lived-experience. More & more of us know the evidence.

We WILL win.
CODA: It's all in this link. Fully referenced.

Every policy maker should see this. And then wonder what the hell is really going on.

So... Here is the @US_FDA's original infographic. Let's take a good look at what they told the public about the National Youth Tobacco Survey 2020 (specifically March 2020, so just before the pandemic).

First, US high school vaping had dropped 29%
fda.gov/files/ctp-nyts…
(2)
Next... Unless you read this VERY carefully, you will not understand frequent use, and daily use, are given as a percentage of "current use."
(3)
One key to good infographics: They deliver facts clearly and need no translation.

This one from @FDATobacco needed translation. You have to do the math to find out how many US high school kids vaped frequent, or daily, in March 2020 (before the pandemic).

@truthinitiative embraces tobacco #HarmReduction, but paints it as a tobacco & vape industry plot.

11 million US adults use #SaferNicotine vapes daily/regularly to quit or reduce smoking. We don't work for industry.

@truthinitiative embraces tobacco #HarmReduction, but falsely claims it's a tobacco & vape industry plot.

...then falsely claims the vape market is "focused on growth and acquisition of new users, most of whom are youth and young adults."

Drug Abuse Resistence Education (D.A.R.E.)

A school-based education program. How well did it work? In 2001, US @Surgeon_General David Satcher placed the D.A.R.E. program in the category of "Ineffective Primary Prevention Programs."

Vaping increases smoking cessation. This impact could be much larger if:

- public health paid more attention to adult smokers

- smokers received accurate information on relative risks
