We have reached a historic settlement with the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office today, officially ending OPDA’s years-long use of fake subpoenas and intimidation to coerce and jail survivors & witnesses of harm. #NOLA#Louisiana
In 2017, we joined @ACLU, @ACLUofLouisiana, @VenableLLP, SilenceIsViolence, and the plaintiffs to file a lawsuit against then-DA Cannizzaro for fabricating subpoenas to force folks into out-of-court interrogations. DA Cannizzaro's office was breaking the law in #Louisiana.
OPDA even went as far as putting its official seal on them to try and trick people into thinking they were real. As a result, #Louisiana jailed people who weren’t accused of a crime for days, weeks, and even months.
To end this unjust practice, DA Jason Williams has agreed to increase internal supervision of material witness warrants & to an independent Monitor who will ensure OPDA complies to this agreement. #NOLAcivilrightscorps.org/case/new-orlea…
Prosecutors have immense power and when they abuse that power they harm individuals, families, & communities. This historic settlement is a step forward in holding prosecutors accountable! #EndMassIncarceration

NEW CASE: In Hamblen County, #Tennessee, alongside partners at @GeorgetownICAP, we are bringing a lawsuit challenging their unconstitutional money bail system. #endmoneybail#aThread (1/4)
In Hamblen County, 50% of the nearly 400 people in jail on any given day in 2019 were detained pretrial. These are legally innocent people being jailed in overcrowded and unsafe conditions due to their poverty. (2/4)
As of late 2019, the jail was operating at 172% capacity, with people sleeping chained to benches, door handles, poles, and their own wheelchairs. In the last fifteen years, the local jail population has more than doubled and the pretrial detention population has tripled. (3/4)
