My last comment about that candidate with the good ad everyone is sharing…

In 2018 and 2020 we repeatedly rushed in super early to back candidates we knew nothing about in districts we didn’t understand.

We poured a lot of money into candidates we liked from early ads.

1/
As a result, we ended up:

1) Backing some of the wrong horses - and losing where we might have won with a different candidate.

2) Over-funding some campaigns while others could have used the money.

2/
The midterms are a year away.

We can’t afford to back the wrong horses or misspend this time.

We also can’t afford to pour excess time, money or attention into races that are entirely out of reach.

3/
There are going to be a lot of good ads for candidates. A bunch of them will go viral.

This time around, we need to learn from the last couple cycles.

I don’t think any of our early national crushes won. Can’t think of a candidate who had a viral first ad who won…

4/
We have to be a bit more measured this time - especially we blue staters who just LOVE red state candidates who fit in with us more than their districts.

This time, we need to take more direction from people who know the district, race and candidates.

5/
Great ads are energizing. There will be plenty.

They are like profiles on dating sites though.

We oughta get through a date or two at least before falling in love.

No chasing early crushes this time. We did that. It didn’t work. Now we know.

This entirely summarizes my relationship with Twitter lately:

A while ago, I posted about getting my car back and thanked some very kind people who, unprompted, put some money in my tip jar which helped offset some of the bill. I was appreciative and wanted them to know…

1/
Some woman replied, all pissed off and offended, that I “took donations” when her husband used to “lie in gravel” to repair her kids’ cars.

So, let’s just pull this one apart a bit.

The lady was mad that people wanted to help me pay for something *she* got for free.

2/
And this was a person who followed me.

I’ve been on Twitter since 2016. I’ve written the equivalent of nine novels in that time.

That content might be valueless to the vast majority of people. However, if they follow me, apparently they find some value in it.

A mere $1,390 later, my beloved Honda has shiny new rotors, calipers, brake pads, and brake lines.

When your kids are the passengers, don’t eff with their safety.

Thanks to the very kind folks who threw a few beans in my can. Truly thankful. I appreciate you.
And allow me to just rave about this garage a bit…

Car was supposed to be done by end of day. Around noon, owner calls me. Brake lines aren’t fitting quite right. Doesn’t feel comfortable giving me the car back with them. Wants to pull them and get replacements. Might be tmrw.
Apologizes profusely. Called as early as he could in case I need to make other plans.

Calls two hours later. Got OEM replacements. Will be done by EOD. Will leave it for pickup after hours.

Did more work. Upgraded the parts. Finished on time. Charges me $200 under estimate.

My beloved aging Honda is in the shop for what will likely be a brake job. I don’t have a ride so I have to wait for it.

I am going to drink all of this cafe’s coffee. All of it.
OMG. The repair is going to cost $1,500.

I’m going to cry. Well, that just ruined my day/week/month.
Brakes, rotors, calipers, brake lines.

And it’s gonna take at least all day.

And now I’m going to refill my coffee and go dejectedly walk a few miles home in flip-flops.

Damnit.

I have a beer and some time, so a little story…

My beloved old Honda wouldn’t start today.

Now, I may or may not have sent it barreling through an unseen foot of water at 2 am last night.

That may have occurred and logic suggests may be related.

1/
It would fire up but immediately stall.

Now, I should probably mention that I am very close to useless at fixing cars.

I once decided to change my own brake pads. It turned into a 3-day odyssey of the damned.

Car repair is not in my genes.

2/
However, I am patently averse to 1) being cooped up at home; and 2) paying an egregious amount of money to service my aging vehicle.

It is 11 years old. It has over 230k miles on it. The interior is battle-scarred with the wounds of a life fully lived.

It is in its twilight.

So, my quest for a fantastic cheesesteak in Philly yest was an adventure.

Made it to only one place on the way into town. The cheesesteak was… not great.

I wanted to take it aside and have a conversation with it.

“Your mother and I aren’t mad. We’re just disappointed.”

1/
I’m not going to cheesesteak shame. It isn’t important where that fair-to-middling sandwich came from. I’m not going to point fingers.

Tony Luke’s. It came from Tony Luke’s.

This place is overrated. Don’t @ me. I tell you what you need to hear not what you want to hear.

2/
Then catastrophe struck: I ran out of time to even get a Second Lunch.

And I had a concert to get to.

Would there even be a dinner?

One mediocre sandwich? Could this really be all I’d eat in Philly?

Reality said “Yes.”

My steely resolve said “No, sir or madam. No.”

This morning, my friend, @MuellerSheWrote, posted something about Merrick Garland taking action against Texas’ abortion ban and added something along the lines of ‘pressure works’.

Apparently, an array of dumbfucks gave her shit.

This has me saltier than a bar pretzel.

1/
The root of the dumbfuckery appears to be the reference to pressure having an impact.

Listen, if you are such a clueless pollyanna that you still believe in the Year 2021 that *anyone* in government is walled off from influence, wake up.

You’re hopelessly naive.

2/
Merrick Freaking Garland doesn’t need to check Twitter to be influenced.

He doesn’t need to know @MuellerSheWrote exists or know I exist or know you exist.

He doesn’t need to have a Twitter account or even have internet access.
