This. We can make this much better. We can live up to the promises we made the people of the world. We have to be open to change and demand better for all of us
One of the biggest reasons for my professional reputation as "a maverick," besides my whole insistence that white supremacists were plotting some kind of big global power grab (how's that denial working out for you now, guys?) is my focus on nonwhite, non Anglo communities
And I contend now, as I always have, that that's a pretty fuckin stupid reason to consider a journalist "a maverick."
I mean, I'm leaning in to that reputation now. God knows sucking up to those mediocrities never got me anywhere
The reason I keep harping on this isn't because I have scores to settle, although I admit that part feels pretty good too. It's because I think it is important to point out that I was (for just one example) one of many journalists pointing out to San Diego's mainstream news orgs
that there was a nasty unexamined past and present to the region, that those of us who were covering those "fringe" movements were seeing them go mainstream, and that to not take it seriously would be disastrous. But all of us bringing that info to the mainstream were something
other than white males and thus we immediately got branded "troublemakers," "intense," "mavericks," "kooky," what have you. It's why I say diversity in journalism is resilience. White male journalists often cannot see past their overwhelming anti-woman and racist biases
but it is often invisible, as our society privileges the white male viewpoint as the right and proper mainstream "objective" view. They uphold the status quo rather than challenging it. And that's what happened in San Diego journalism when I insisted that people pay attention
Blue-eyed blonds who are too smug to ask questions don't often have a lot to fear amid white supremacist power grabs, and of course the far right knows this so they cultivate those biased reporters, which in turn leads to very stupid "Trump supporters in diners" stories
It's not just San Diego -- it's everywhere -- but as the San Diego region has been a disinfo lab for decades thanks to the proximity of the border and presence of Tom Metzger and who knows what else, it's highly concentrated in this region.

Discourse by Fox, OANN, Newsmax hosts and the elected officials who consider that viewership to be "their base" is directly playing into attacks like this. There have been several attacks on health workers the last couple weeks baltimoresun.com/news/crime/bs-…
Story without paywall here. This is what all the Doctor's Plot shit is aimed at doing -- triggering unstable people into committing acts in highly politicized ways wbaltv.com/article/jeffre…
These attacks will continue to escalate until this weaponized shit is deplatformed entirely

We're being firehosed again, and it's in the service of a disinformation attack that is particularly geared toward leveraging unexamined misogyny into attacks on women. Been going on a few weeks now
Mostly I'm seeing it in the form of journalists and disinformation "experts," quotes because they're not fucking experts when they keep falling for the same shit over and over, attacking high-profile subject matter experts who also happen to be women
I don't know who might be behind it (although of course I have my own ideas), nor what the goal might be (although naturally I have ideas about that too.) All I can say is that disinfo channels are pushing anti-woman horseshit and a bunch of dudes are eagerly taking the bait

Which is a #TantonNetwork lie that he is using in an apparent attempt to change the subject from the fact that the federal gov told him yesterday that if he keeps stealing COVID-19 relief funds to use for fascist anti-masker bullshit they won't give Arizona any more money
You do notice the pattern, right? Whenever somebody gets into trouble for doing corrupt shit, about fifteen like-minded electeds put on camo and head for the border like they're doing some Nam bullshit. Here's yesterday's story apnews.com/article/corona…
Like when Ted Cruz got mocked for trying to flee the country when a bunch of his constituents died thanks to horrible decisions he had a hand in so he had to do a documentary theguardian.com/us-news/2021/m…

It's the #TanttonNetwork spreading inhumane disinfo about the border again. It's what their politicians reliably return to when they need to distract the public from some atrocity or policy failure
Oh yeah this is for sure it. He's having a little tantrum.

It is very easy for me to see how the social network that he built got to be the way it did
