The irony of North Carolina redistricting is that the rules allow Republicans to draw a map like this were put in place by Democrats in attempt to gerrymander Republicans out of power.
The reason Gov Roy Cooper (D) can't veto the maps is because Democrats in 1996 took away the gubernatorial veto to prevent a Republican governor from vetoing their gerrymanders.
The Chief Justice of the North Carolina supreme Court who will pick the panel to decide any redistricting cases is a Republican because #NCGov Roy Cooper (D) politicize Court appointments and it backfired on him spectacularly.
Roy Cooper broke with tradition & passed over of Paul Newby (R) for Chief Justice. So an enraged Newby decided to challenge Cheri Beasley (D) & run for Chief Justice. Newby won & GOP now controls Chief Justice & redistricting review oversight
And it's worth noting that #NCGov Roy Cooper (D) was a North Carolina state Senator in 1996 when Democrats in the state legislature blocked giving the Governor veto power of redistricting laws.
