Does Kathleen Stock's presence on @SussexUni campus give trans and nonbinary students reason to feel unsafe? Let's look at the evidence:
🧵
1/12
Back in 2018, @docstockk emailed her Philosophy students, to reassure them on this very point. She said:
"I make a practice of using preferred pronouns and names. I would never discriminate against any student for any aspect of their identity, including being trans."
2/12
From the same email:
"I am not transphobic. I stress in several places in my writing that all trans people share legal rights to be free of violence, discrimination, and harm."
You can see the whole thing here: medium.com/@kathleenstock…

Since then, she has repeated the same sentiment many times. Practically everything she writes on this topic includes some variant of this statement.
4/12
For example, in May 2019, she and other feminist philosophers said:
"We repeatedly stress that trans people are in deserving possession of full human rights, including freedom from harm, discrimination, and harassment."

In July 2019, she wrote:
"personally I am more than happy to use preferred pronouns for colleagues and students and would consider it rude not to."

In February 2020, she said:
"One thing I think critics of trans ideology are not good at addressing, is the genuinely dehumanizing and discriminatory talk about trans women, as a group, which I see regularly among some, and which I’m happy to ... say publicly that I reject."

In 2021, Kathleen Stock's book, Material Girls was published. This is the culmination of her thought and research into the question of sex and gender over the past few years. Despite a constant campaign of vilification and harassment, @Docstockk continues to assert that:
9/12
"Trans people are trans people. We should get over it. They deserve to be safe, to be visible throughout society without shame or stigma, and to have exactly the life opportunities non-trans people do." (p.240)
10/12
Kathleen Stock is not transphobic. The students calling for her to be fired are flat-out lying about that. Trans and nonbinary students are perfectly safe at @SussexUni, as they should be.
11/12
I hope the University management will issue a statement promptly, condemning the harassment Professor Stock has been subjected to, and assuring her of their full support in pursuing her work.

This is what I'd say if I were a Labour frontbencher being asked "is it transphobic to say only women have cervixes?"
First of all, I want to say that I don't think my friend and colleague Rosie Duffield is transphobic, and I'm very sorry that she doesn't feel able to join 1/n
us at Conference this year. I will be working hard with the rest of my front bench colleagues over the next year to defuse the tensions around this issue and ensure that everyone can have their say without fear of abuse.
Now, to your question, I think the issue originally 2/n
arose in the context of discussing how to ensure that as many women as possible access the free cervical cancer screening programme we have in place in this country - cancer screening is a fantastic achievement of the NHS and it saves many lives every year. 3/n
On 17th June, local residents and councillors asked a series of questions about the future of domestic abuse services in Brighton & Hove, following the defunding of @riseuk earlier this year.
We heard some welcome commitments, but we are still very concerned.
1/14
We have been asking since February for the tender documents for domestic abuse services, but @BrightonHoveCC has missed deadline after deadline and still not released them.
Debbie asked the @brightonhovecc TECC Committee why their Equality Impact Assessment says there will be a shift away from women only refuge provision in year 3 of the contract. Committee Chair @steffingtonheg said there will be new resources by year 3. We look forward to it

The @ONS have decided that it's no longer possible to ask people simply what their sex is, even though this has been asked in every census since forever. Women have used the resulting data to prove that we face ongoing and widespread discrimination, at large and small scales 1/10
The people making decisions about the census, however, have been persuaded that some (unknown number of) people won't respond to the census at all if they have to answer this very basic factual question. 2/10
They have therefore changed the guidance so that an unknown number of people are advised to answer it according to their 'official documents' - which may contradict each other. Since it's easily possible to change the sex marker on a passport or driving licence 3/10
I like Lloyd, but this article is a mess. Here's a long and detailed thread explaining why, mostly in pictures. Really happy to meet in person to discuss it, @lloyd_rm. /1
First two paragraphs were so full of inaccuracies I had to annotate them twice. Sunday Times article is here if you want to check what's actually been reported: thetimes.co.uk/article/boris-… /2
Just started reading the @UKLabour manifesto and there's so much great stuff in there! I'm going to pull out some of my favourite bits as I go along and put them in this thread. Might turn out quite long! 1/n
