Just started reading the @UKLabour manifesto and there's so much great stuff in there! I'm going to pull out some of my favourite bits as I go along and put them in this thread. Might turn out quite long! 1/n
@UKLabour Fracking ban
2/n
@UKLabour Water and energy back in public ownership
3/n
@UKLabour Powers - and funding - for local councils to run bus services
4/n
@UKLabour Redesigning cities for active travel and outdoor play. This is absolutely transformational if they really mean it. 5/n
@UKLabour An end to privatisation in the NHS
6/n
@UKLabour Free dental checkups and free prescriptions
7/n
@UKLabour Free personal care
8/n
@UKLabour No more SATs
9/n
@UKLabour Action on off-rolling
10/n
@UKLabour Lifelong learning and an end to the marketisation of universities. Fantastic.
11/n
@UKLabour Alternatives to prison
12/n
@UKLabour Access to justice - restoration of legal aid
13/n
@UKLabour Action - and funding - to tackle violence against women and girls
14/n
@UKLabour This is so important - stopping violent men from cross-examining their victims
15/n
@UKLabour I'm just snipping every paragraph at this point. Look at this. No fault divorce and decriminalisation of abortion
16/n
@UKLabour Youth centres - properly funded
17/n
@UKLabour I'm not sure what this bit about annual income assessments means. I'm hoping it means an end to the awful Minimum Income Floor for self-employed people on Universal Credit
18/n
@UKLabour Loads of excellent stuff on rights at work, but this is particularly worth pointing out - statutory bereavement leave
19/n
@UKLabour And this underpins it all. Repeal of the anti-trade union laws. About time.
20/n
@UKLabour Four weeks paternity leave is still pathetic, tbh. But better protections for pregnant women is good. 21/n
@UKLabour Really pleased and relieved to see this. Glad to know @UKLabour have listened to women and recognised that there are times when we need single-sex services. 22/n
@UKLabour Repeal of the 2014 Immigration Act, which intensified the hostile environment 23/n
@UKLabour No more indefinite immigration detention 24/n
@UKLabour Retaining rights to free movement as an explicit aim for Brexit negotiations 25/n
@UKLabour Getting rid of the horrendous minimum income requirements for migrants to enjoy their right to family life. 26/n
@UKLabour Safe and legal routes to the UK for asylum seekers. Oh, this is a lifesaving policy. I'm a bit emotional, reading so many ideas that are rooted in decent humanitarian values in a UK political party manifesto. 27/n
@UKLabour I assume this means asylum seekers will have the right to work 28/n
@UKLabour This is good and clear. Scrap Universal Credit 29/n
@UKLabour Emergency reforms to UC while the new system is designed. No more 5 week wait, no more sanctions, no more benefit cap, no more 2 child limit, childcare costs upfront, telephone and face to face support. Yes, all good.
30/n
@UKLabour End to the bedroom tax and more generous support for renters on low incomes. 31/n
@UKLabour This promise to end the Work Capability and PIP Assessments is a bit light on detail, but it's pretty clear. 32/n
@UKLabour End right to buy. Of course. No point building all those new council homes if we can't keep hold of them 33/n
@UKLabour This is interesting. Local rent controls for the private sector 34/n
@UKLabour No more immigration checks by landlords 35/n
@UKLabour This is a bit of a mixed bag. Votes at 16, great. No mention of getting rid of our disastrous First Past the Post voting system, though 36/n
@UKLabour Taking responsibility for our part in global injustices. Yes. 37/n
There is lots more in there. Do read it for yourself. Obviously, I don't agree with every dot and comma, but overall this is an inspiring manifesto. I will be campaigning for a @UKLabour victory with renewed vigour! 38/38 (phew!)
