To the AEI author of the piece and the researchers she references the absence of POSITIVE RIGHTS such as housing, education, healthcare are not authoritarian. People dying on the streets is not authoritarian. Being forced into sweatshops is not authoritarian.
This is a capitalist liberal view of rights but it is not a universal or ideology-free thing one can objectively measure. One can view liberal negative rights as important but absent positive rights of economic security and healthcare and food and childcare they don’t mean much
The sanctity of liberal negative rights with ZERO consideration for positive rights is a bourgeois and highly contestable moral framework. In this framework Charles Murray being deplatformed at Middlebury college is a greater crime that homelessness. I don’t agree with this
Violent revolutions are seen as per se “authoritarian”, poor farmers in the global south being exploited for hundreds of years are simply supposed to ask the ruling class nicely for basic economic security and rights! A pretty convenient framework for an imperialist US think tank
