Asato Asato anime commentary thread for 86 cour 2! #eightysix
Shiden Iida:

The captain of the new squadron under Lena's command. An "Oddeye"—has heterochromia. #eightysix
In the novel, her design is first revealed in volume 4. Interestingly, is oddly similar to a certain character Sudou Ren's "The Gambler does not Pray", another Dengou novel prize novel (A big breasted girl who talks like a man). #eightysix
Shiden's Juggernaut:

Did you notice its color is a little different? Her unit is an experimental night raid unit, and so its armor's plating is colored different.
Do hold back on pointing out to the Republic that "All you did was just change the color". #eightysix
Bloody Regina/Reina:

A play on Lena's full name, Vladilena.
It's a change in the R and L pronunciations, so it's supposed to be pronounced differently. But since it was published to a Japanese audience, they left it as is. #eightysix
Thanks to that, the English version came out (And the English translation tweaked it accordingly) #eightysix
The black cat, AKA Tipi:

It finally has a name! Its fur looks much healthier compared to the Eighty-Sixth sector. Makes you wanna cry...

Incidentally, Tipi/TP is a shortening of Thermopylae, as in the battle of Thermopylae. The cat is named after a location. #eightysix
The environment suits:

Like Ernst said, it's just to be on the safe side. The Legion don't produce biological weapons.
The risk of letting weapons that can't distinguish friend from foe is obviously huge— #eightysix
and letting the Legion produce them could cause a great deal of danger, so the Empire placed a strict prohibition on them producing these.
It was so strict that the Legion might "classify a human carrying a single knife as being in violation of the prohibition"... #eightysix
This placed the Imperial army in the odd position of not being able to deploy human soldiers with the Legion.

Of course, the Federacy, which opposed the old Empire, treats it as a funny anecdote by now. #eightysix
Ernst:

His line in the PV... lol Even Asato has to wonder about it, and she wrote his lines in the novel!

Despite being the president, he's a very frank person, and in an early draft of a novel he was set to give a thumb up and say "yay!" during his first appearance. #eightysix
But Shin would adamantly refuse to speak to him, so this introduction scene was dropped in the final draft. #eightysix
The Federacy's racial distribution:

It's actually really complicated.
Asato handed the anime staff the materials with regards to the Federacy's racial composition, thinking they'd really struggle to adapt it... But they did it really well. #eightysix
Do note the difference between the Federacy soldiers' ranks and their eye/hair color. #eightysix
Sankt Glycine Base:

Many of the Federacy's large cities have the prefix "Sankt" (like the capital Sankt Jeder). Glycine is French for "Wisteria". #eightysix
Why Wisteria? It's because right before she decided on this name, Asato spoke to the anime's producer, Fuji (his name contains the kanji for Wisteria). #eightysix
Paperwork:

As you can see in episode 12's A part, the Republic uses paper documents. The Federacy, by contrast, uses electronic documents... Tablets and the like. Cultural differences manifest even in the little details. #eightysix
Speaking of the Federacy's documents...:

When the five's profiles are presented, you can kind of make out Kurena's weight...? #eightysix
Spider Woman and Drone Bettle:

Which brings us to our new characters, Grethe and Richard. There's another character, Willem, who's nicknamed "killer mantis". You can kind of see him in the scene, the one with the sabre! #eightysix
Drone bettle refers to the Vanargandr, the Federacy's primary weapon system. Why is Grethe called a "spider", then...? #eightysix
Asato's number two most favorite character in the Federacy arc is in fact Willem, so she's glad to finally unveil his design. He's finally spared from having to have a 'blank' on his image in the character sheet... #eightysix
Her number one favorite in this arc is Marcel, set to appear soon in the anime! Look forward to him, anime-onlys! #eightysix
Q. Why are they her favorites?
A. They were supposed to be background characters, but Asato liked them so much that she promoted them to named character status. #eightysix
Also, she got Willem's design along with Richard's and Bernholdt's.
"Willem's the most handsome of this three, but he's also the only bachelor..."
Asato thought it was strange (and whose fault is that?). #eightysix
Episode 13 commentary time!
When Kaneko was designing the rank insignia, Asato gave him a confusing explanation. "in the Republic, a warrant officer is the lowest rank of officer, in the Federacy, warrant officers are ranked above non-commissioned officers." (He still understood. Thank you!) #eightysix
In the Republic one gets promoted from warrant officer-> second lieutenant (in the anime, normal squadron members like Anju were warrant officers). In the Federacy— #eightysix
a master sergeant can get promoted to a warrant officer, but a warrant officer can't be promoted to a second lieutenant.

Q. Will we see any non-commissioned officers in the Federacy arc, then?

A. Yes! Look forward to it!

#eightysix
Life in the Giadian capital:

Ernst wanted them to experience the joy of choosing what you want, getting it and cherishing it. That's why he gave them the kind of allowances teens living in an affluent household might get. Hence their different outfits! #eightysix
Raiden only go a job because he wanted to. #eightysix
School:

Compulsory education in the Federacy only lasts until primary school. After that, it's optional and costs the citizens money.
But the Federacy is a young country that was only founded nine years age, and they're in the middle of the Legion war, so— #eightysix
in frontier regions (will be expanded upon later) that are further away from the capital, some towns don't even have primary schools built yet. #eightysix
(Provisional) President:

As such, the education standard isn't uniform and many Federacy citizens are illiterate. So until a proper election can be held, Ernst serves as provisional president. The population just isn't on a level to hold a presidential election yet. #eightysix
Special Officers' Academy:

Eugene went to middle school, but didn't continue to high school. Instead, he decided to enroll in the special officers' academy, a special officers' school which Shin and co would later attend, too. #eightysix
It's a Federacy facility for training military officers, but as the word "special" implies, it's different from other military schools in the Federacy. #eightysix
Normal military academies accept people who'd finished their higher edcuation and takes years to train them. The Special Officers' Academy, by contrast, is open to those who'd finished their secondary education. It offers them minimal training, expecting— #eightysix
that they pick up the rest "on the job". In other words, it's a facility to quickly churn out young officers.

The Federacy is simply that pressed for soldiers and officers. #eightysix
Eugene:

Shin's first friend in the Federacy. His name isn't Eugene as a play on the Japanese word yuujin (friend), though. As such, writing "my friend Eugene" gave the author a headache each time. #eightysix
If you've noticed, he's got white hair. He's an Alba. And much like Lena, he's a noble Celena, at that.

In the old Empire, Celena were low-ranking nobles. And Eugene's family were indeed low-ranking nobles.

Since the war was going on while the Empire was—
#eightysix
overthrown and turned into the Republic, the high-ranking nobles who managed large corporations hung onto much of their authority. By contrast, low-ranking nobles, who had little assets to begin with, lost all of their fortune... #eightysix
When creating Eugene's character, he was given two traits. "An older brother with glasses", to evoke Rei, and a "serious, diligent Alba", to evoke Lena. He was a character meant to invoke memories of these two influential people in Shin. #eightysix
The Food status in the Federacy:

Unlike the Republic, where almost all food was synthesized and real eggs were a rare commodity, in the Federacy you can make tasty omelette rice. Natural products from farms and fields are in circulation on the market. #eightysix
However, imported foods and ingredients can't be obtained, so the Fedreacy only has substitutes and synthetic products of those. #eightysix
The Federacy's Territory:

Its borders mostly trace the Empire's. It's divided into the capital area, where the capital functions of the country are managed, and the frontier, which is in charge of food production. #eightysix
The border areas are designated as "combat frontiers" and handle national defense. The Legion are held back at the combat frontiers, and so the frontier areas are protected, safeguarding the Federacy's supply of natural food. #eightysix
Into the Federacy*

pardon!
Adel-Adler:

Frederica's real family name, and the name of the imperial family of the Giadian Empire. The name means "noble eagle", and the Giadian national symbol being the double-headed eagle stems from this. #eightysix
Incidentally, Augusta simply means "Empress". It's not so much a name as it is a title, derived from the female form of the ancient Roman Emperor Augustus.

(...Is turning a verb's -us suffix into -a make it female? Asato can't remember). #eightysix
Episode 14 Commentary! #eightysix
The Vanargandr:

The Federacy's prided third generation Feldreß (polypedal armored weapon). Has a 120mm caliber gun, 2 HMGs and heavy composite armor. It's the backbone of the Federacy's armored forces, packing both heavy firepower and firm armor. #eightysix
The book/anime calls it "sluggish", but the Vanargandr has a cruising speed of nearly 100kmph, and is a match for the Legion's Löwe in terms of armor and firepower. But it's a manned unit and limited when it comes to sharp turns and acceleration— #eightysix
—so its overall mobility is inferior to the Löwe. And since it's so heavily armored, it weighs 50 tons.

In that regard, Shin doing a backflip with that heavy machine is impressive, but it makes sense he got scolded for it. It's surprising Eugene didn't get hurt... #eightysix
It's piloted by two people. During training Shin was operator and Eugene was the gunner. The gunner doubles as the unit's commander, hence Eugene being the driver and his commander was the gunner during the B part. The parallel two-seat is an anime original addition. #eightysix
The Juggernaut's cruising speed:

It's considered "better than a treadmill tank", but for how slow it often gets called, it can move at 60kmph. But since it's up against Löwe, which move at 100kmph, and Grauwolfs move even faster than that, it's slow by comparison. #eightysix
Exposing a Feldreß stomach:

A tank's belly (underside) is a weak spot. it needs to exercise caution when riding over hills. . During the scripting stages, Asato asked that— #eightysix
During the scripting stages, Asato asked that "please have Marcel be scolded for needlessly exposing his unit's stomach!". It's not poor Marcel's fault... #eightysix
Incidentally, she's been sitting on the name "Eugene" and hoping to name a character that since middle school. She's baffled by how he died so quickly while Marcel, who she offhandedly named after an author of a book she read, survived. #eightysix
Armored flight suits:

When boarding Feldreß, Federacy pilots wear designated flight suits, unlike the Republic's field uniforms!

These aren't pilot suits, though, and it's like this in the books, too. If you wanna see pilot suits, read volume 5 of the novel! #eightysix
Marcel:

His full name is Erwin Marcel. His name is derived from a book by Erwin Rommel. He was Eugene's friend in middle school and knows his little sister, Nina. Asato liked him so much he got promoted a regular cast member and finally got insert art in volume 7. #eightysix
Incidentally, Marcel and his classmate gossiping about the new unit "killing a dozen pilots during its test" was rather embellished. It sent ten people to the hospital, which is still plenty dangerous, though. #eightysix
Federacy pistols:

Introduced during the fire practice scene. Smaller than the Republic's issued pistols. Remarkable for being striker pistols without a percussion hammer.
Small pistols with low loading capacity. Even here, they're mostly used for suicide purposes... #eightysix
Asato's weird answers, Federacy pistol edition:

During a script meeting, she was asked "Is there a model the Federacy's pistol is based on?"

Asato: "The FN M1910"

She was met with a "Huh?" and nothing more (and that suggestion ended up getting ignored...) #eightysix
Incidentally, one of Asato's editors, Tsuchiya, caught on to her liking of FN guns.

"Is Shin's pistol a FN high power model?" they asked.

Asato didn't imagine Shin's pistol as a high power model and just went "no". Asato just couldn't read the room (sorry)... #eightysix
High power models are kind of brusque and cool, so they might fit Raiden or Bernholdt better. #eightysix
"We won't let them take us away":

This line from the B part refers to the Legion of course. The Federacy is aware of the Legion pillaging brains from corpses. If anything, it's strange the Republic forbade the collection of corpses for years and never noticed... #eightysix
That scene:

Asato's impression of the storyboards: "Scary".

The hand, the rocket, the realization it's detached, the blood puddle... In the novel, Eugene gets hit with an EFP round (like the one from episode 9). Even a Vanrangadr can't take that... #eightysix

Poor Shin. Old habits dies hard and no one gets it. #eightysix Image
Oh Marcel. I get the feeling a lot of people are going to be iffy about him this season, but he's a good guy, really. Asato likes him for a reason. Anyway, Shin doesn't sweat him too much rn; he's used to being treated worse by his colleagues. #eightysix Image
